United States of America

Location:

RC1: United Tech Research Center 411 Silver Lane, East Hartford, CT, 06108 USA

Position Role Type:

Hybrid

For more than 90 years the RTX Technology Research Center (RTRC) has operated as a multidisciplinary group of experts collaborating on groundbreaking innovations. Our team includes some of the world’s leading scientists, researchers and engineers working to anticipate the discoveries destined to change everything, and they transform that research into the solutions and products that help our businesses shape the future of aerospace and defense. Our unique talent, experience and resources allow us to deliver rapid responses to critical, time-sensitive challenges and develop breakthroughs for a safer, more connected world.

The RTX Technology Research Center (RTRC) is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Principal Engineer – Advanced Manufacturing Digital Thread. The candidate will join the Manufacturing Modeling Team, which specializes in the development and demonstration of new manufacturing processes, process optimization, and advanced product design. The team develops technologies for RTX applications across a variety of technical areas including advanced materials, model-based digital thread, electrification, sustainability, complex integrated systems, amongst many others. The individual will work with the team in a fast-paced R&D environment alongside leading scientists and engineers from across RTRC and the greater RTX organization (including Collins Aerospace, Pratt and Whitney, and Raytheon) to conceive, develop, and demonstrate advanced manufacturing digital thread technologies for the next generation of Aerospace and Defense applications.

What You Will Do:

Research activities will include leveraging digital capabilities in new and emerging advanced manufacturing processes such as additive manufacturing, machining, forming, and material deposition. These processes can exist in a stand-alone form or be combined by the emerging field of convergent manufacturing. The successful candidate will acquire data from on-board sensors, develop insights from these data to develop or improve processes, characterize associated material/part characteristics, and leverage developed insights to support rapid product development and rapid qualification/certification. The candidate should also be eager to work in a cross-disciplinary environment, for example to validate and refine physics-based process models or to develop novel manufacturing processes alongside hardware-focused technologists. Constant learning and desire to not only implement, but to develop new technologies, are a must.

The candidate will have exceptional communication skills and be capable of interacting with RTRC senior management, external customers, as well as members of the technical staff. The candidate must be able to provide timely, accurate and detailed reports and presentations.

Qualifications You Must Have:

Required experience/qualifications: The candidate must have proficiency with a combination of the following

  • Programming for data processing and scientific computing (e.g. Python, Matlab, C++)

  • Experience with one or more advanced manufacturing methods including but not limited to: additive manufacturing (powder bed fusion, directed energy deposition, etc.), direct write of electronics, cold spray, hybrid manufacturing, machining, forming, casting, joining, welding, robotic forming or assembly, etc.

  • Experience with collection, manipulation, or reasoning on manufacturing data arising from sensors, scanners, and/or other measurement systems

  • Experience with one or more digital thread technology areas including but not limited to: edge computing, cloud computing or cloud data management, internet of things (IoT), Industry 4.0, digital twin, smart factory, model-based definition, programmable logic controller (PLC) programming, closed-loop manufacturing

  • U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, permanent resident, refugee or asylee) or eligible to obtain necessary export authorizations required.

Qualifications We Prefer:

  • Research-minded nature, ability and desire to advance the state-of-art

  • Experience creating funding proposals and executing projects in a leadership role

  • Understanding of material microstructure/properties and knowledge of advanced material characterization methods, as well as their correlation to manufacturing techniques and process parameters

  • Contact or non-contact in-situ or ex-situ inspection/metrology methods including but not limited to coordinate measuring machine (CMM), fringe projection, interferometry, x-ray, visual or IR camera or visions systems, photogrammetry, laser scanning

  • Leveraging machine learning and AI such as large language models (LLMs), principal component analysis (PCA), or reduced order modeling to generate insights into manufacturing processes and data

  • Understanding of cyber-security issues as related to networking and data in advanced manufacturing

  • Structural and/or multi-physics finite element analysis (e.g. Abaqus, Ansys, Comsol, or open-source packages) or other numerical simulation method (finite difference, finite volume, discrete element method etc.) especially for modeling of advanced manufacturing processes

  • Design tools and methods such as traditional CAD (e.g. NX, Solidworks) and/or emerging methods such as implicit geometry modeling (e.g. nTopology)

Education:

Required: B.S. in Manufacturing Engineering / Industrial Engineering / Mechanical Engineering / Materials Science & Engineering or a closely related field with 8 years of direct work experience.

Preferred: Ph.D. in Manufacturing Engineering / Industrial Engineering / Mechanical Engineering / Materials Science & Engineering or a closely related field
