Hours: Schedule will vary, working less than 20 hours per week

The City of Durham’s Office of Performance and Innovation in the Budget and Management Services Department seeks a public service-motivated, community-oriented individual to assist with data analysis. This is a part-time internship (approx. 15-20 hours per week) responsible for working with Participatory Budgeting (PB) staff to extract meaningful insights from data, identify trends, and inform residents, staff, and leadership about PB outcomes. A highly competitive candidate will have experience with quantitative and qualitative data analysis and strong oral and written communication skills.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Collect, organize, and interpret data sets from various sources (e.g., databases, external data, surveys).

  • Quantitative and Qualitative analysis of PB program data.

  • Develop and maintain dashboards, reports, and data visualizations.

  • Research, analysis, and presentation of results.

  • Other special projects and data analysis as needed.

Minimum Qualifications & Experience

  • Current undergraduate or graduate student studying a field related to: Public Policy, Public Administration, Political Science, Planning/Urban Design, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Economics, or a related field.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage and thoughtfully analyze quantitative and qualitative data.

Additional Preferred Skills

  • Able to communicate critical findings.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to explain complex data insights to non-technical stakeholders.

  • "Self-starter" - Must be able to work independently on assigned projects with minimal supervision.

  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
