DEPARTMENT INFORMATION:

This position is open to Colorado residents and non-residents applicants.

This position is covered by the Partnership Agreement between the State of Colorado and Colorado Workers for Innovative and New Solutions (COWins).

New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.

DESCRIPTION OF JOB:

About the Position As the Regional Safety Officer, you will provide the staff of CDOT s Region 5 (southwestern Colorado) with oversight to daily operations and activities as they relate to employee health and safety. Activities managed include identifying and evaluating hazardous conditions and practices, developing and implementing prevention methodologies using industry standards and sound best management practices, ensuring procedures and programs related to employee safety and health are providing value and being adhered to, advising and educating others on hazard identification and prevention methods, and measuring, assessing, and evaluating overall safety process effectiveness. You will also support and advocate for the current Statewide safety process called Excellence in Safety and all corresponding initiatives and programs within that process as directed by CDOT s Office of Transportation Safety.

Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

Serve as the Region s subject matter expert for all safety matters. Provide ongoing support to CDOT s Excellence in Safety program and work closely with management to ensure program compliance and adherence. Conduct safety ride-alongs with maintenance, traffic, and program delivery staff to assist with safety best practices and procedures and developing supervisor/lead worker proficiency. Participate in monthly area safety meetings; review and assist with preparation of safety meeting agendas. Work closely with the Loss Control Engineer at headquarters to ensure safety plans are meeting CDOT specifications and current OSHA requirements and are being adhered to at active engineering project sites. Keep the Regional Transportation Director and Regional Leadership Team members informed on all known or emerging safety trends and issues and provide recommendations and advice on how to most effectively manage situations as they arise. Routinely and actively communicate with a geographically dispersed and technically diverse workforce. Strive to make safety part of everyday operations across all levels and functional areas within the Region. Work collaboratively with headquarters Office of Transportation Safety and other Regional Sa ety Officers to share information, trends, and solutions. Act as the Region s primary investigator for accident or incident investigations and serve as the chair of the Region s Incident Review Panel. Establish a budget for required safety items and follow all procurement rules and regulations. Review Project Safety Management Plans (PSMP) and provide training and outreach regarding PSMP processes. Provide safety instruction and training to Region and other CDOT employees. Establish and chair the Region Safety Committee to create and sustain safety as part of everyday operations. Use sound time management methods, value to the organization, and return-on-time investment approaches when prioritizing work schedule. Seek opportunities to improve current professional aptitude, skillset, experience, and communication network. Other job duties as assigned.
