Description of Work

Positions 60017163, 60017084, 60017091 will be filled from this posting. You only have to apply once to be considered for both positions.

This position is located in the Duplin County Maintenance Unit. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of state-maintained roads in Duplin County. On a regular and recurring basis, employee operates at least two pieces of equipment, including but not limited to backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patch/crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer or sweeper. Experience in performing semi-skilled and skilled maintenance tasks, such as hauling asphalt, aggregate or soil materials, plowing snow, spreading salt, compacting asphalt, compacting embankments, sweeping roads; loading ditching material; and disposing of roadside debris. Work to include, but not limited to, installation of traffic & erosion control devices, clearing of right of way, roadway grading, machining unpaved roads, pavement repair, pipe installation or other drainage tasks, inspecting contract work and monitoring manual tasks performed. Emergency responses include traffic accident clean-up, snow and ice removal, and other emergencies as they occur. This position is subject to emergency callback and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances. Must have ability to act upon both verbal and written communication. May perform a variety of other assigned duties. Employees at this level may train and operate equipment associated with a higher-level positions.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures

  • Knowledge of work zone safety and NCDOT Workplace policies and procedures

  • Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer or sweeper

  • Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation or asphalt patching

Additional Expectations:

Safety toe footwear is required for this position. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate Class A CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment screening.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
