The State Highway Administrations (SHA) Office of Materials Technologyis currently recruitingfor a*Friction Crew Chief (Transportation Engineering Technician V)inAnne Arundel County*. This position is open to anyone who meets theminimumandselectivequalifications listed below by the closing date. This is a position specific recruitment. Nature of Work:This position will perform friction testing and collect friction data on selected portions of the state highway network, including other selected pavement sections. This position is responsible for supervising a field technician who drives the test vehicle and will need to ensure that basic vehicle maintenance is performed. The position is also responsible for initial data collection and performing basic quality checks on the collected data. Occasionally, the crew will perform specialized friction testing on selected short sections of pavement in a more comprehensive manner than used for the network survey. This position requires knowledge and the ability to cross-function with other teams of the Field Explorations Division when needed. A detailed understanding of the test methods, testing systems, and state highway network is required to fulfill the duties of this position.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Eight (8) years of experience in technical engineering related work in the areas of design, traffic, construction, mate ials testing, engineering surveys, maintenance, or planning.

Selective Qualification:Four (4) years of the required experience must have involved data collection, field testing, or testing methods/systems, to include one (1) year of experience with driving vehicles with a trailer of up to 26,000 lbs. GVWR.

Selective qualifications are utilized when the position requires specific or additional bona fide occupational qualifications (i.e., knowledge, skill, or abilities).

Preferred Qualification:

The ideal candidate should possess the following:

Knowledge of state highway network

Supervisory experience

Computer skills to manage field data and familiar with Excel

Experience with Geographic Information System (GIS) and database analysis

Experience reading and interpreting highway maps

Notes: 1. Applicants may substitute education in a civil engineering curriculum at an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 semester credit hours for each year of the required experience, up to a maximum of three years. 2. Applicants who possess an associate's degree in either engineering, construction management or surveying or surveying technology from an accredited community college, college or university are considered to have met two years of the eight-year experience requirement.

Licenses and Certifications

Candidate must possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the state of Maryland.
