Location: Chester Park Building, University of Minnesota Duluth This position will be supervised by Kelsey Prihoda, Great Lakes Transportation Extension Educator at Minnesota Sea Grant and HazMaTON Coordinator. The Hazardous Material Transport Outreach Network (HazMaTON) Undergraduate Research Assistant will assist in implementation of one or more projects identified in the HazMaTON Strategic Plan (2023 - 2024). In 2025, the two major objectives of the research assistantship will be: Conducting a comprehensive review of literature, publicly available databases, and geospatial datasets that can be used as resources to better understand the type, quantity, mode of transportation, and uses of the most commonly transported hazardous materials within the Laurentian Great Lakes region. Creating and updating point of contact and transport mode/route maps for a redesigned HazMaTON website (hazmaton.org). This includes using the information generated from the literature review to update and improve the existing transportation maps on hazmaton.org that were generated for crude oil. The research assistant must be reliable and organized, exhibit good attention to detail, and have ArcGIS experience. Qualifications Required Qualifications: Eligible applicants must meet all of the following: Enrolled in the Spring 2025 Semester as an undergraduate at the University of Minnesota for a minimum of six credits. Able to comply with all training requirements and certifications in a timely manner. Proficient in using ArcGIS online. Be organized, highly responsible, detail oriented, and willing to work as a team member. Commit to staying on schedule with this one-semester project. Be dependable, punctual, and responsible. Be able to work independently, follow detailed instruction (both written and oral), while recognizing when assistance is required. Preferred Qualifications: Best applicants will also demonstrate the following: Experience with Zoom platform. Knowledge of transportation networks for crude oil and refined petroleum products. High level of organizational and planning skills. Experience in working in a team towards a project goal. About the Department General Responsibilities: The HazMaTON Undergraduate Research Assistant will focus the majority of their efforts on identifying publicly available, science-based, and unbiased sources of data. These data, along with input from HazMaTON members, will be used to update and improve the existing transportation maps on hazmaton.org. In addition, the research assistant will create resources to be added to HazMaTON's future redesigned website, including a map of important network points of contact. Responsibilities include: Conduct a literature review to identify and compile existing information from publicly available, science-based, and unbiased sources on the type, quantity, mode of transportation, and uses of the most commonly transported hazardous materials within the Laurentian Great Lakes region. Attend at least two quarterly HazMaTON all-member meetings (via Zoom) to solicit feedback that will be used to improve the existing transportation maps. The research assistant may also be asked to periodi ally attend meetings (via Zoom) of the HazMaTON Communications Committee. Using feedback from HazMaTON members and information gathered from the literature, update the existing truck, ship, pipeline, and rail maps in ArcGIS online. Document this process for HazMaTON members. Working with Minnesota Sea Grant Web Developer (Jane Reed) and HazMaTON Coordinator (Kelsey Prihoda), embed the updated and improved transportation maps to the redesigned HazMaTON website and document this process for HazMaTON members. Provide a short training session (via Zoom meeting) for HazMaTON members to use and update the improved maps.
