American Engineering Testing Drill Assistant in Duluth, Minnesota
Job Summary Assist the Crew Lead on a drill rig. Per the decision of the Crew Lead, the Drilling Assistant may be assigned the duties of a Driller (operating the drilling equipment, judging access and utility clearance needs, and maintaining the drill rig and auxiliary vehicle) or of a Logger (collecting and handling soil samples, preparing field logs, etc.). At the beginning of each workday, check with Crew Lead to determine what equipment and materials will be needed for the day s assignment. Assemble and load equipment and materials so that the crew can get a timely start to workday. Driller Role Duties: Set up equipment and operate the drill rig in a safe manner, for the purpose of obtaining soil and rock samples. Assist Crew Lead in clearance of underground utilities/improvements. Team with the Crew Lead in surveying test boring locations and elevations. Install monitoring wells and piezometers. Properly seal boreholes per regulatory requirements if needed; also, properly backfill non-environmental boreholes. Clean/restore site to a reasonable level. Assist Crew Lead in sampling as needed to increase efficiency, productivity, and maintain safety. Logger Role Duties: Obtain soil samples from test borings, using proper collection/handling methods (per the Geotechnical Field Manual). Prepare written field logs of borings, including judging and documenting soil classifications and apparent geologic origin. Assist Crew Lead in clearance of underground utilities/improvements. Team with the Crew Lead in surveying test boring locations and elevations. Assist Crew Lead in installing monitoring wells and piezometers. Assist Crew Lead in backfilling boreholes, and clean/restore site to a reasonable level. Assist Crew Lead in drilling procedures as needed to increase efficiency, productivity, and maintain safety. Conduct field, laboratory and office activities in a manner consistent with federal, state, and local regulations, along with AET s QA and Health and Safety Policies, to promote the safety and protection of employees, clients and the public. Maintain valid driver s license and acceptable driving record. Some positions may require use of personal vehicle for company business. Maintain compliance with DOT driver regulations. Maintain appropriate physicals. Maintain a good, professional relationship with the client/owner when they are present. Participate in education and training. Review Geotechnical Field Manual and associated QA procedures, and have understanding of sampling/field log preparation requirements. Maintain the quality level of work needed for the project at an efficient rate, but still maintaining a safe manner. Assist CPT Technician on dedicated CPT rig, or on CPT apparatus attached to a conventional drill rig when needed. Maintain knowledge of regulatory requirements for sealing of environmental boreholes. Properly use and maintain company instruments and equipment. Coordinate with other AET staff with the ultimate goal of increasing efficiency, productivity and communication.
