Kapsch TrafficCom is seeking a Staff Technical Writer to join our documentation team in Duluth, GA.

The Staff Technical Writer (TW) works on the Technical Publications team, writing content for a variety of documents that support our ongoing transportation projects. Writing tasks range from authorship of end‑user guides to copy-editing of technical design documents. Writers drive collaboration between departments by interviewing subject matter experts (SMEs) for content, such as software developers, system engineers, and project leads. They also gather relevant materials, such as org charts, drawings, wiki entries, checklists, and other supporting artifacts. With research in hand, he or she builds documents that align with the Kapsch quality standards and client expectations. Staff writers are self-motivated and work well with others. They follow departmental editing guidelines, track their work in Jira, and keep document hand-offs between team members clean throughout document life-cycle.

Essential / Core Functions

  • Determines development approaches in coordination with project and technical managers and the Document Management Specialist

  • Uses client requirements to edit or develop a document’s structure.

  • Gathers relevant materials, such as client requirements, org charts, drawings, wiki entries, and checklists, to write and build documents with quality

  • Interviews SMEs to clarify ambiguous passages and gather missing information..

  • Coordinates and collaborates with Document Management Specialist, other TWs, and other Kapsch employees

  • Updates document progression in tracking software.

  • Follows departmental writing, editing, and coordination processes.

  • Reports progress to Technical Writing Team Lead

Knowledge /Skills Required to Perform Essential Functions

  • Excellent writing and editing skills

  • Excellent researching and synthesizing skills

  • Vocabulary for discussing grammar, rhetoric, and style of a technical text

  • Experience using style guides to guide writing choices

  • Experience generating and editing technical documents of many genres, such as user manuals, installation guides, software documentation, design documents and training guides

  • Experience with content management systems, including an understanding and appreciation for version-control processes.

  • Experience with task-tracking software, such as Jira

  • Experience with the professional publication process

  • Excellent time management

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Content Management Systems

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience documenting large integrated hardware or software architectures

  • Familiarity with Atlassian’s JIRA and Confluence

  • Background in Transportation Industry

Communication Skills

  • Well-developed verbal skills to allow clear communication without ambiguity

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • The ability to follow instructions and procedures, and to use good judgement in the performance of assigned work

  • The ability to be a team player in fostering good relations with other team members.

  • Maintain a professional approach in all dealings with others, and work harmoniously in a team environment

  • Must be able to work in rapidly changing environment and adapt quickly to new situations

  • Must be self-motivated, requiring minimal supervision

Education / Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, English, or Engineering

  • 2 years of experience working in the technical sector performing technical writing or editing
