​The Chemist helps lead our quality assurance mission via execution of a variety of standard chemical assays and determinations of different substances and materials. The role requires the understanding of diverse principles and techniques; undertakes infrequently performed and specialized analyses, either individually or as a part of a group; modifies methods to resolve problems related to routine determinations; and prepares and assure accuracy of standards.

The Chemist may undertake advanced analytical work with a minimum of preliminary instruction; modify methods for non-routine problems; assist with method development; and coordinate the work of a small group within the section as necessary. The Chemist may be required to perform complex analytical work often involving problem-solving situations; participate in projects or method development, usually as a team member of a small group; test or evaluate methods and protocols for adequacy under the direction of higher-level scientists; write narrative reports of completed or proposed work as requested; and occasionally interpret and explain such work to in-house staff, clients, and other outside contacts.

Responsibilities

  • Perform basic to sophisticated procedures and analyses as required.

  • May interpret and analyze data

  • Approve/report analytical data.

  • Plan, organize, and write reports.

  • Operates laboratory equipment as it applies to methods within scope of competency

  • Troubleshoot laboratory equipment as it applies to methods within scope of competency

  • Perform routine maintenance on laboratory equipment

  • Perform advanced troubleshooting and maintenance/repair on laboratory equipment

  • Serve as an in-house consultant on projects or in areas of expertise.

  • May be responsible for technical supervision and/or training of technicians and/or other Analysts

  • Assure adherence to safety and environmental regulations.

  • Carry out assignments in a timely, diligent, and safe manner and perform work in accordance with NQAC SOPs.

  • Assure quality of results, by establishing and maintaining QA plan and ICPs.

  • Provide accurate and precise data consistent with internal QA requirements.

  • Owns a corrective action and leads problem solving team

  • Responsible for corrective action stage and completion

  • Can be considered a point person for an internal audit from QA

  • Assure equipment is maintained in reliable working order and make repairs within the capability of the analyst.

  • Represent NQAC at internal and external meetings as directed.

  • Respond to CS customer questions regarding sample logistics

  • Write, review and provide proper documentation for methods.

  • Modify methods to resolve problems requiring knowledge of theory and underlying principles of the analysis.

  • Make recommendations for new equipment and methodology.

  • Lead validation and verification activities within the laboratory

  • Contribute to studies to develop new methods and techniques pertinent to the analysis of foods.

Requirements

  • ​BS degree in Chemistry or closely related science discipline required

Experience

  • ​3-5+ years' experience in food science laboratory or closely related laboratory environment with bachelor’s degree in chemistry or closely related science discipline

  • 2-5 years' experience in food science laboratory or closely related laboratory environment with master’s degree in chemistry or closely related science discipline

  • 0-2 years' experience in food science laboratory or closely related laboratory environment with PHD in Chemistry or closely related science discipline.
