Serco Senior Database Administrator in Downsview, Ontario

Position Description

Provide technical direction for database design, maintenance, and administration. Evaluate and recommend available DBMS products after matching user requirements with system capabilities. Develops and formulates standards, procedures, and conventions for database use. Leads technical/programming staff to ensure database security from accidental or intentional loss or damage. Determines file organization, indexing methods and security procedures for specific user applications. Role will involve supporting mission-critical databases on a robust, highly available system, playing a pivotal role in ensuring the availability, performance, and security of diverse database infrastructure both on-prem and Microsoft Azure Cloud environment on RedHat Linux and Windows Servers. Also, will be responsible for designing, developing, and implementing ETL processes to support data integration and data warehousing solutions. This role involves working closely with data analysts, database administrators, and other IT professionals to ensure data quality, integrity, and accessibility.

Requires demonstrated expertise in the use of database management systems and related products from vendors such as Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, Postgres DB. Familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively with development teams to design and implement effective, scalable database solutions.

  • Handle the installation, configuration, and maintenance of critical database environments, guaranteeing optimal performance and security.

  • Establish robust monitoring systems to detect issues proactively and respond promptly.

  • Implement and enforce security policies and access controls, utilizing encryption and data masking techniques to protect sensitive data.

  • Set up proactive monitoring systems for early issue detection and respond to alerts with thorough root cause analysis.

  • Dedicate efforts to maintaining high availability within the database environment.

  • Keep the database infrastructure current with the latest patches and updates while strictly adhering to security policies.

  • Utilize strong SQL, T-SQL, and PL/SQL programming skills to contribute to the support and optimization of stored procedures, triggers, and functions.

  • Design, develop, and implement ETL processes using ETL tools (SSIS). Create mappings, workflows, and sessions to extract, transform, and load data.

  • Develop scripts for data extraction, transformation, and loading.

  • Optimize ETL processes for maximum efficiency and performance.

  • Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, offering technical expertise and support.

  • Maintain flexibility and openness to learning and adapting to newer database environments as organizational needs evolve.

  • Communicate clearly and effectively with stakeholders regarding database-related matters, fostering transparency and understanding through verbal and written documentation.

  • Possess familiarity with the administration of MySQL, Postgres DB .

  • Willingness to learn other new database products would be considered an additional asset.

  • Participates in team-based projects, many of which may be matrix managed; must be accustomed to completing deliverables within time and budgetary constraints.

  • Manage multiple parallel projects, meeting designated deadlines and milestones.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in computer science or related fields

  • Minimum of 7 Years as MS SQL Server /Oracle Database Administrator

  • Good hands-on MS SQL Server Version 2019 onwards and Oracle Database 19c onwards.

  • Experience with MS SQL Database Architecture, MS SQL Database Upgrade, Database migration and Data cloning methods.

  • Responsibilities include designing, installing, upgrading, patching, tuning, monitoring and troubleshooting databases with large amounts of data (Terabytes).

  • Perform capacity planning, SQL analysis, schema revisions, security administration and user account maintenance.

  • Immediate participation in an active on call rotation required.

  • Candidate must be capable of providing off hours support to avoid impacting database availability during normal business hours.

  • Excellent interpersonal, comm and presentation skills, and be a team player.

  • Takes initiative to complete critical tasks, and overcome obstacles in a proactive manner.

  • Works well in a growing, fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment

  • Keeps informed on the latest technological approaches and trends in the technical field.
