Position Purpose:
Responsible for assisting the Director with management of the Division of Laboratory Animal Resources (DLAR). Provide leadership in the planning, direction and coordination of the DLAR, which includes training, supervision, and scheduling of the staff. Maintain the facility in full regulatory compliance including AAALAC (Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care) certification.
Essential Functions:
Manage animal facilities in compliance with regulatory standards including institutional policies, procedures, and practices. Evaluate the current animal use program for current and future needs.
Responsible for the day-to-day management of the DLAR. Oversee the provision of animal husbandry and care to assure compliance with federal regulations and mandates regarding adequate veterinary care. Identify and resolve issues. Assist with oversight of the Budget.
Provide employees assistance in the appropriate use of equipment, facilities and operations required to accomplish a wide array of activities related to animal housing and usage in research.
Human Resources management functions including direct supervision of staff within a specialized area of responsibility. Responsible for interviewing, hiring, performance appraisals, succession planning, coaching, disciplinary procedures, and terminations. Assess workload issues and distribution of assignments. Provide timely communications to staff. Plan for future staffing needs.
Active member of the leadership team who will participate in strategic planning at the executive level to help establish program wide policies, procedures and organizational development for the Division.
Interface with faculty and research program managers at Wayne State to coordinate a continuous improvement and communication platform for best practices in the field.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:Bachelor’s degree
Bachelor’s degree in science, business, or related field from an accredited college or university, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience:Expert (established subject matter expert, 7+ years’ experience)
Experience working within an animal facility is a must.
Experience managing an animal research program is highly preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Strong working knowledge of the Animal Welfare Act and Regulations.
Ability to work directly with a variety of laboratory animal species.
Demonstrated management experience overseeing operational and personnel duties.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Knowledge of and experience in the conduct of research.
Must be able to multi-task, shift priorities and delegate effectively.
Ability to plan for multiple contingencies and be able to implement solutions.
Develop strategies to achieve organizational goals.
Ability to provide direction to a multi-faceted laboratory animal care and use program.
Ability to build relationships; foster collaboration; acquire and develop talent; and inspire to achieve shared objectives.
