Position Announcement - Engineering Technician POSITION STATUS Full-time STARTING SALARY RANGE $51,332 $70,387 (GS9/11) DOE POSITION LOCATION Detroit Lakes, Minnesota CLOSING DATE Open Until Filled POSITION PURPOSE: This position works with SWCD, USDA-NRCS and other partners to provide the engineering assistance necessary for landowners, community groups and local government units to plan, implement and maintain a variety of conservation practices. The engineering technician position is a professional position requiring a diverse background in pre-planning, problem evaluation, problem solving, and design and installation of structural and biological conservation activities addressing non-point source pollution. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Two-year vocational degree in engineering, natural resource management or equivalent post-secondary education. Proficient knowledge of the use of computer-aided design and drafting equipment (preferably AutoCAD Civil 3D), ArcGIS, and total station and GPS surveying equipment. Prefer current Engineering Job Approval Authority (EJAA) for NRCS Practice Codes 638, 620, 412 & 410. Strong interpersonal skills; capable of working effectively with individuals in the public, private, and government sectors; self-motivated: able to work with minimal supervision. Valid driver s license, physical ability to carry equipment over rough terrain and ability to perform outdoor work in all seasons of the year. Apply engineering skills and knowledge to a variety of engineering projects, from conception through completion, including preparation of preliminary engineering reports, cost estimates, preparation of detailed plans and specifications, construction supervision and inspection, and final certification of completed projects. Document current engineering projects and reports work accomplished to NRCS District Conservationist and District Administrator. Schedules projects with other field staff and assists landowners in project initiation, pre-construction conferences, and completion. Review complex engineering plans for NRCS and District engineers approval; perform CAD drafting for engineered projects. Review and develop stormwater management plans and related best management practices for the county and others. Perform technical work according to the USDA-NRCS Field Office Technical Guide, under minimal supervision; Coordinate construction inspection; maintain progress records and field notes for reporting and quality control.
