The Opportunity

This position works out of our Des Plaines, IL location in Abbott Molecular Diagnostics . Abbott Molecular Diagnostics is a leader in molecular diagnostics and the analysis of DNA, RNA, and proteins at the molecular level.

As the Manager Molding and Packaging Engineering , you’ll manages the planning and completion of injection molding and packaging engineering projects, including the design and development of molding and packaging consumables, molding and packaging processes, labeling processes, documentation, tooling, and fixtures to enhance productivity and product quality.

What You’ll Work On

  • Provide technical leadership to molding and packaging engineering staff regarding project prioritization, technical decisions, process validations, and continuous improvements.

  • Implement and manage resource planning and project management tools.

  • Manage department budget and oversee project budgets related to molding and packaging projects.

  • Support ongoing production, product improvements, and new product introductions.

  • Monitor and evaluate project and department progress and results.

  • Participate in cross-functional teams.

  • Review and approve Quality Plans, Design Change Plans, Master Validations Plans, protocol, and written reports.

  • Drive continuous improvement of molding and packaging engineering technical capabilities.

  • Prepare technical reports, analysis, recommendations, and presentations reflecting the status and results of projects in progress on a regular basis.

  • Coach, manage and develop technical staff.

  • Develop, implement, train, and monitor effectiveness of engineering systems and procedures to ensure compliance to FDA, GMP and all other applicable agency regulations.

  • Ensure a safe work environment consistent with OSHA requirements and Abbott Policies

  • Prepare departmental budgets and control expenditures to stay within spending limits.

  • Hires and retains a diverse, highly qualified staff and provides ongoing performance feedback. Sets goals which align to department plans and manages the execution of goals through coaching and mentoring.

  • Maintains a safe and professional work environment.

  • Support all Company initiatives as identified by management and in support of Quality Management Systems (QMS), Environmental Management Systems (EMS), and other regulatory requirements.

  • Complies with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, other regulatory requirements, Company policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments. Maintains positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and vendors.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree and 8+ years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.

  • Thorough knowledge of plastics, plastics injection molding and injection mold construction.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree preferred.

  • 3-5 years of management experience preferred.

  • Experienced with injection molding tooling design. Knowledgeable in the design and development of molds and design for manufacturability and longevity. Experienced working with multiple injection mold design houses and fabrication shops for high and low cavitation tooling.

  • Experienced in process development for injection molding processes. Able to troubleshoot common molding process issues and work with molding suppliers to implement corrective actions as needed. Subject matter expert in scientific molding processes and practices.

  • Experienced in the design of injection molded parts and best design practices for design for manufacturability and mold-ability. Able to recommend materials for part suitability and cost.

  • Subject matter expert for medical device packaging. High level of knowledge of manufacturing processes and quality standards. Excellent working knowledge of writing protocols, preparing testing samples, testing samples, and making strong conclusions. Excellent firsthand working knowledge of medical device package testing as well as proficient working knowledge of ASTM standards associated with medical device package testing.

  • Proficient in reading and creating engineering drawings, including dimensions, tolerances and schematics including geometric dimensioning and tolerancing. Proficient and extensive working knowledge of molding and packaging equipment for all related processes. Proficient and extensive working knowledge of materials and suppliers’ processes. Proficient and extensive working knowledge of lean manufacturing philosophies.

  • Experience working in a broader enterprise/cross division business unit model preferred. Ability to work in a highly matrixed and diverse business environment. Strong leadership skills, including the ability to set goals and provide positive and constructive feedback respectfully to build positive relationships and improve business results. Ability to work effectively within a team in a fast-paced changing environment.

  • Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization. Multi-tasks, prioritizes and meets deadlines in timely manner. Strong organizational, planning, and follow-up skills and ability to hold others accountable.

  • Able to travel domestically approximately 10-15% of the time.

The base pay for this position is $97,300.00 – $194,700.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
