Description:
The manager collaborates extensively with local leadership (President, Chief Operating Officer (COO), Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), and Chief Medical Officer (CMO)) in ensuring effective implementation and support of the risk management plan/program.
Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State and Local laws and regulations, Trinity Health's Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical and professional behavior.
Develops, coordinates, and administers ministry-wide systems for risk identification, investigation, and reduction; maintains a network of informational sources and experts; performs risk surveys and inspects patient care areas; assesses for loss potential; and proactively engages in risk reduction activities.
Develops and maintains a risk management plan/program in order to efficiently provide services across the ministry and minimize exposure to general and professional liability events.
Oversees the patient, visitor, and property loss incident reporting system, and the
preparation and distribution of statistical reports concerning the incidents.
Reviews, investigates and follows through on patient incident reports meeting
certain risk criteria.
Leads and participates in root cause analyses investigations and reporting of serious adverse events, serious safety events, and sentinel events to the appropriate parties and makes recommendations for improvement.
Leads and takes an active role in Healthcare Failure Mode and Effects Analysis.
Responsible for data management, claims management, and the education components of the ministry’s risk management activities.
Participates in evaluation of claims for settlement within administrative authority; negotiates settlement of small claims within administrative authority; advises collection department of appropriate action for unpaid accounts involved in litigation or related to a serious adverse event; and approves payment for or replacement of lost property after evaluating claims.
Works directly with legal counsel and the Area Claims Manager as a team member in the defense of claims; and has ongoing access to ministry liability defense counsel to consult regarding both preventive and corrective measures to be taken in situations having legal connotation.
Reviews contracts between ministry and outside entities to assure appropriate insurance/indemnity/hold harmless language.
Administers the equipment reporting component of FDA's Safe Medical Devices Act of 1990.
Facilitates development, review and revision of consents and releases utilized in clinical areas.
Oversees and participates in preparing risk related reports for Administration and the Board of Trustees/Directors.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing, health administration or related field required (master’s degree preferred).
Licensures:
Iowa licensure as a Registered Nurse.
Current Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) by the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management (ASHRM) required or obtained within 3 years of hire.
Experience:
Minimum five (5) to seven (7) years' experience in a health care setting.
Risk management and/or performance improvement experience required. Leadership experience in clinical and professional practice is preferred.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Must be effective in presenting information to different audiences including senior management, governance, medical staff and associates.
Must be proficient in use of Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and the Internet.
Must be able to use computers for documentation and other relevant activities. Demonstrates specific knowledge related to software programs such as event reporting systems, government reporting systems, and other appropriate software programs. Experience with computer applications such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), HealthStream, Intranet, and use of reporting tools. Helpful to have experience with PowerChart/EPIC or similar tool.
