Job Description
Summary:
The Health Equity Coordinator will play a key role in advancing equity-focused strategies to address health disparities across Iowa Health and Human Services (HHS). This position supports the development, implementation, and monitoring of initiatives, programs, and policies that reduce barriers to health access for Iowa residents. The Coordinator will collaborate with internal teams, external partners, and community stakeholders to embed equity principles in all aspects of service delivery and policy-making.
Responsibilities:
-Develop, implement, and coordinate efforts to build agency capacity for health equity, equity and inclusion.
-Advise, educate, and provide technical assistance to staff using project management, change management, planning, and facilitation skills.
-Provide resources and educational materials for department staff including: research health equity concepts, tools, and resources, data analysis and data disaggregation, and qualitative evaluation methodologies.
-Assist with the development of communications materials for both internal and external audiences.
-Provide assistance to programs to ensure culturally relevant and linguistically appropriate communications.
-Assist with other HHS duties to support communications, governmental relations, project management, and strategic planning efforts.
-Participate in projects and work groups as a health equity subject matter expert, ensuring integration of health equity concepts and practices.
Assess, develop, and evaluate professional development and learning opportunities to improve health equity capacity within the agency.
-Develop and conduct training for HHS employees and contractors.
-Identify external opportunities for staff to build capacity to address health equity within social services.
-Support other agency activities such as data equity, quality improvement, quality assurance, communications, strategic planning, division planning efforts, workforce development, and other services to improve health equity focus areas.
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in public health, social work, public administration, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
At least 2 years of experience in health equity, community engagement, or public health.
Familiarity with health disparity data and its use in program design.
Strong communication, facilitation, organizational, and project management skills.
Cultural competency, humility and the ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
Experience in government, nonprofit, or community-based organizations.
Knowledge of social determinants of health, health equity frameworks, and population health monitoring.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
1) Six years of full-time work experience in the administration or operation/execution (i.e., providing consultation and/or technical assistance to stakeholders, research and analysis, or enforcement of program guidelines/policies/procedures) of a program (i.e., the provision of a service or an administrative oversight/enforcement responsibility).
2) All of the following (a and b):
a. A total of four years of education and full-time experience (as described in number one), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in any field equals one year of full-time experience; and
b. A total of two years of graduate-level education and full-time experience (as described in part a), where twenty-four semester hours of accredited graduate college or university course work in any field equals one year of full-time experience.
3) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes eighteen months of full-time work as a Program Planner 1.
