Principal Financial Group Data Engineer in Des Moines, Iowa

What You'll Do

We're looking for a Data Engineer to join our Enterprise Data & Analytics space, supporting and maintaining data products for Principal’s Retirement and Income Solutions value stream. We are in the process of transitioning our data from an on prem warehouse, using Informatica PowerCenter and DB2, to an enterprise cloud solution using multi-faceted cloud technology through an extensive multi-year modernization effort.

This team works in a scrum environment developing, maintaining, and supporting ETL applications, producing high volume data solutions that are easily consumable by team members and providing data insights to make key business decisions. You’ll have the opportunity to:

  • Own technical aspects of data management functions including creating, loading, transforming, cleansing, processing, analyzing, and visualizing data.

  • Work directly or in support of data science/analytics to design, develop, test and integrate data from various source systems into large-scale, easily consumable data platforms used for providing insights that promotes business growth and efficiency.

  • Build data solution designs, models and infrastructure by applying architectural patterns and principles, data governance and security, researching new technologies and approaches, understanding requirements, all phases of testing, debugging, documenting, quality assurance practices, implementation and maintenance.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of industry trends, create optimized data components and systems that use appropriate development environment. Employ technology (i.e., scripting languages, data movement tools) for efficient system integration.

  • Recommend ways to improve data reliability, efficiency and quality.

Who You Are

  • Bachelor's degree plus 2+ years of engineering/development experience or a Master's in a related field

  • Experience having worked with relational database concepts and table structures and are proficient in writing queries using SQL

  • Experience in development of systems for data extraction, ingestion and processing of large volumes of data

  • Passion for continuous learning and skills growth

  • Strong planning, organizational, problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making skills

  • Good communication skills and staying engaged with work, teammates, and business partners in a highly collaborative environment to solve problems and deliver customer value

Skills That Will Help You Stand Out

  • Experience with AWS, Snowflake, Python, and ETL (extract/transform/load) concepts and tools.

  • Data warehouse experience

  • Informatica Power Center (or similar data mapping tools)

  • DB2

  • Test automation

Salary Range Information

Salary ranges below reflect targeted base salaries. Non-sales positions have the opportunity to participate in a bonus program. Sales positions are eligible for sales incentives, and in some instances a bonus plan, whereby total compensation may far exceed base salary depending on individual performance. Actual compensation for all roles will be based upon geographic location, work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer.

Salary Range (Non-Exempt expressed as hourly; Exempt expressed as yearly)

$63750 - $147600 / year

Time Off Program

Flexible Time Off (FTO) is provided to salaried (exempt) employees and provides the opportunity to take time away from the office with pay for vacation, personal or short-term illness. Employees don’t accrue a bank of time off under FTO and there is no set number of days provided.

Work Environments

This role offers in-office, hybrid (blending at least three office days in a typical workweek), and remote work arrangements (only if residing more than 30 miles from Des Moines, IA, or Charlotte, NC). You’ll work with your leader to figure out which option may align best based on several factors.
