This is a non-merit position. Only applicants who meet the Minimum Qualification Requirements and meet all selective requirements (listed below) will be placed on the eligible list.
The Iowa Department of Corrections (DOC) is seeking a vibrant, highly motivated and meticulous attorney to join its growing internal legal team located in Des Moines, Iowa. Under supervision by the DOC General Counsel, this position serves as an internal legal advisor for the DOC central office, prisons, community-based corrections, and prison industries. This position will work collaboratively across all divisions within the DOC and with the Attorney General’s Office.

Selectives
353 Law
6 months’ experience involving:
Contract Law
Administrative law
Legal research and writing
Corporate law/corporate structure
Public law
12 semester hours covering coursework in:
Paralegal, Law, Pre-law
AND
354 Law Degree
Possession of a law degree from an accredited institution.
AND
106 Corrections (or Penology)
6 months’ experience, 12 semester hours, or a combination of both in the various methods, such as incarceration, parole, and probation, by which society deals with convicted offenders.
AND
107 Criminal Justice
6 months’ experience, 12 semester hours, or a combination of both in enforcement, courts, or corrections, as demonstrated by one or more of the following: Police officer, Investigator, Bailiff, Correctional counselor, Correctional officer, Criminal prosecutor, Criminal defender, Sheriff, Sheriffs’ deputy, Police detective, Coursework in penology, Corrections, Criminal justice
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Graduation from an accredited law school and the equivalent of five years of full-time successful and responsible experience in the practice of law;
OR
the equivalent of three years of full-time experience in the practice of law in the employing agency shall be considered as qualifying experience.
