The Work Unit:
Division of Disease Control and Public Health Response (DCPHR)
The Division of Disease Control and Public Health Response (DCPHR) exists to ensure that the Department has the ability to effectively monitor, detect, diagnose, prepare for, and nimbly respond to, all types of conditions and events that impact the public’s health.
The purpose of the Communicable Disease Branch (CDB) is to monitor, investigate, and control epidemic and communicable diseases affecting the public health in Colorado, as required under Colorado statute including: invasive bacterial diseases; foodborne/enteric diseases; waterborne diseases; respiratory diseases; vaccine preventable diseases; healthcare-associated infections; tuberculosis; COVID-19; and zoonotic/vectorborne diseases. Within CDB, the Foodborne, Enteric, Waterborne Diseases (FEWD) Program consists of three units:Foodborne, Enteric, Waterborne Diseases Response Unit; Wastewater Surveillance Unit; and Enteric Special Projects Unit. The Foodborne, Enteric, Waterborne Diseases Response Unit conducts surveillance for and responds to clusters and outbreaks of foodborne, enteric, and waterborne diseases; it also contains the Enteric Disease Interview Team (EDIT). The Wastewater Surveillance Unit is responsible for wastewater surveillance of all pathogens and collaborates with wastewater utilities; the National Wastewater Surveillance System Center of Excellence is housed in this unit. The Enteric Special Projects Unit is responsible for CDC funded enteric special projects, including FoodNet and the Integrated Food Safety Center of Excellence.
What You Will Be Doing:
A team of disease interviewers that conduct routine case interviewing, case investigation and outbreak response on behalf of CDPHE and local public health departments (LPHA). These functions are essential to communicable disease investigation and response.
Responsibilities of the position include but not limited to:
Case and Contact Investigation
Interview reported enteric disease cases using designated case report forms or EpiTrax surveillance forms, following case investigation protocols.
Identify and interview contacts of cases and follow contact investigation protocols.
Under the direction of the supervisor and/or enteric disease team, provide education about different enteric disease pathogens including, symptoms, duration, and modes of transmission.
Notify LPHAs of disease control matters, exclusions and outbreaks.
Utilize additional methods, including text messages and emails, to contact cases.
Provide surge capacity support during an outbreak investigation by interviewing or administering an outbreak specific questionnaire or survey.
Administer supplemental questionnaires for cases identified to be part of a CDC multistate cluster or outbreak.
Data entry
Document and enter case and contact investigation information in the disease surveillance form in EpiTrax.
Document additional case or contact findings in EpiTrax not included in the surveillance form.
Conduct medical record chart review with cases that cannot be reached or are unable to be interviewed.
Complete REDCap administrative surveys to send enteric surveys to certain cases.
Review completed entries and quarterly reports for accuracy and completeness; update fields in EpiTrax when indicated.
Enter data into the System for Enteric Disease Response, Investigations, and Coordination (SEDRIC); enter norovirus outbreaks for closure.
Outbreak and Enteric Support
Join CDC multistate calls
Assist in the development of case interview tools and resources such as exclusion letter templates
Complete the appropriate outbreak/supplemental questionnaire PDF
Enter data into SEDRIC
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
Minimum Qualifications:
NOTE: An applicant may meet the minimum qualifications for this job in one of two ways: They may qualify through their work experience alone or through a combination of education and work experience.
Work Experience:
Four (4) years of relevant experience working in public health, health education, case/patient interviews, social work, medical record review or other closely related experience in an occupation related to the work assigned to this position.
OR:
Education and Work Experience:
A combination of related education from an accredited institution in Biology, Community Health, Global Health, Epidemiology, Public Health, General Studies, or a field of study closely related to the work assignment. AND/OR Relevant experience working in public health, health education, case/patient interviews, social work, medical record review or other closely related experience in an occupation related to the work assigned to this position equal to four (4) years.

Preferred Qualifications:
In addition to the minimum requirements, the successful candidate in this position will have the following highly desirable experience and competencies:
Relevant experience with the State of Colorado
Experience conducting case interviews, especially enteric disease case interviews
Experience in Communicable Disease Surveillance and Outbreak Response.
Experience working at and/or with local public health agencies
Experience abstracting data from medical records and laboratory reports
Demonstrated proficiency working collaboratively with internal teams, community partners, and a variety of partners/stakeholders.
Demonstrated experience working with people from different social backgrounds including race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, ability, age, and class.
