Job Summary:

Accessions, sets up, prepares grosses and dissects human tissue under the direction/supervision of a pathologist. Makes members/patients and their needs a primary focus of ones actions and develops and sustains productive member/patient relationships. Actively seeks information to understand relationship with members/patients. Grossing Technician considers how actions or plans will affect members and responds quickly to meet member/patient needs and resolves problems.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • This position, knows and complies with all Kaiser Permanente quality, safety, and emergency policies and procedures. Demonstrates quality and effectiveness in work habits and clinical practice in every interaction with patients, colleagues, providers, and leadership. Ensures patient safety in the preparation and provisioning of care related to but not limited to medications, procedures, infection prevention, fall prevention, including consistent use of two patient identifiers and procedural time outs. Reports safety hazards, accidents and incidents, and unsafe working conditions promptly.

  • Accessions patient samples into computer database (CoPath AB&T). Assures proper handling, care and refrigeration of appropriate specimens. Selects and submits tissue sections for microscopic examination, per protocols. Thorough understanding of entire tissue handling process. Follows established procedures for patient identification, specimen collection and labeling, grossing and tissue submission. Trouble-shoots and solves problems dealing with specimen accessioning, including mislabeled specimens, incomplete information, etc. Familiar with process of rejecting specimens and responsible for follow up of the same specimens. Responsible for loading tissue cassettes in appropriate processors.

  • Ensures compliance with all local, federal, CLIA and CAP regulations. Interacts effectively with supervisor, co-workers, pathologists and other staff members in a courteous, professional and helpful manner that supports best practices in patient care. Resolves conflict through finding a common ground and obtaining cooperation with minimal disruption. Collaborates with others to ensure work processes and workflow meets organizational needs. Properly disposes of all unused/unexamined specimens according to hazardous waste and biological waste regulations.

  • Other duties as assigned by laboratory manager.

    Basic Qualifications:

    Experience

  • Minimum of six (6) months of histology and/or surgical gross experience required.

    Education

  • Associates degree in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology, or at least 60 semester hours, or equivalent, from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, include either 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, or 24 semester hours of science courses that include 6 semester hours of chemistry and 6 semester hours of biology and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination.

  • Proficient typing and computer skills.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum one (1) year of histology and/or surgical gross experience.

  • College biology educational track preferred.
