Xcel Energy Electrical Engineering Intern in Denver, Colorado

Position Summary

Work with the Engineering staff to support Transmission Planning & Strategy. Work as an intern doing tasks that support the tools, programs, and initiatives used to perform various planning tasks such as evaluating various transmission alternative technologies, assist in conducting power flow studies to analyze transmission system performance and reliability. Assist in preparing reports and presentation on transmission system projects. Gain exposure to industry standards and regulatory requirements related to transmission planning. Through practical operations experience and mentoring, a successful candidate will gain significant professional confidence and people skills.

This Internship will be working out of Denver, CO and will be part-time during the 2024 - 2025 school year and full-time during the summer. The start date for this position is May 1, 2025.

Responsibilities

  • As an intern with the transmission planning team, you will support the technical analysis of the transmission network. Evaluate and develop an internal guidance for alternative transmission technologies which include power flow optimization, dynamic line ratings and grid enhancing technologies. This initiative will provide an opportunity to better understand the transmission system and new supporting technologies and methods.

  • A solid understanding of economic and business decision making will be critical in guiding the Company’s project selection process and enhancing overall performance. This knowledge will enable you to contribute effectively to the evaluation of project feasibility, cost benefit analysis, and strategic prioritization. By aligning technical insights with economic rational and business objectives, you will help ensure that the Company’s investments are not only technically sound but also economically viable and strategically aligned with long term goals.

Requirements

  • Must be enrolled in an ABET accredited bachelor's engineering program or be enrolled in a technical mathematics or science program beginning their Junior or Senior year.

  • Understanding of electrical engineering principals

  • Understanding of business and economic decision making

  • Mechanical understanding of utility facilities, such as transformers and transmission lines would be beneficial but not required.

Non-Bargaining

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $22.50 to $24.00 per hour
