Position Summary

The Corrosion Engineer will be capable of developing comprehensive assessments required to develop and manage corrosion control programs. The position provides technical expertise and guidance to Operations, Engineering, and Management for the design, implementation, monitoring, and troubleshooting of corrosion mitigation programs for pipelines and associated assets owned and operated by MPLX G&P.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Corrosion Engineer position requires a thorough understanding of electrochemical and corrosion principles, field testing techniques, interpretation of laboratory analysis, corrosion monitoring techniques, and mitigation strategies. The position requires knowledge and experience to determine corrective action for high-level corrosion problems and can implement and execute corrosion integrity programs as directed. The position requires qualifications and experience in the following subjects and/or tasks related to the corrosion control field:

  • Provides technical support related to internal corrosion control assessment, monitoring and mitigation programs throughout the G&P organization.

  • In depth understanding of internal corrosion measures such as corrosion allowance, internal coatings, corrosion-resistant alloys, non-metallics, and corrosion inhibitors.

  • In-depth knowledge of internal corrosion monitoring devices such as coupons and probes, internal corrosion sampling and analysis, and the selection and use of corrosion inhibitors, biocides, and other production chemicals.

  • Knowledge, skill and ability to Interpret and apply the company's procedures with an appreciation of underlying industry codes and standards and government regulations.

  • Keeps abreast of latest trends and technologies through organizations such as NACE, AMPP and API. Leads evaluation and application of new corrosion control technology in order to optimize future developments in terms of operability and reliability.

  • Ability to analyze and resolve corrosion control problems involving technical as well as application performance issues and document findings and recommendations.

  • implements procedures, monitors field activities for compliance with procedures through regular contact, reports, summaries and periodic audits.

  • Assists in the development of the annual O&M and capital budgets relating to corrosion control activities for the Operations departments. This involves work scopes, reviewing or developing cost estimates, analyzing the feasibility of proposed solutions and suggesting innovative alternatives. Supports the projects through final approval and completion.

  • Facilitates installation including modifications to designs to meet functional requirements of corrosion mitigation systems.

  • Coordinate and provide leadership in the commissioning of corrosion control facilities involving multiple groups including vendors, suppliers, engineering design and construction personnel.

  • Knowledge, skill and ability to defend the company's technical and procedural positions related to corrosion control activities and represent the company in an agency audit, inspection, or enforcement action.

  • This position requires strong communication and report writing skills, a thorough understanding of state and federal regulations, and the ability to work as a part of the G&P Integrity Team. This position requires frequent interaction with a wide array of individuals both inside and outside of the Company.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or physical Sciences

  • Five or more years of experience associated with pipeline integrity and corrosion control.

  • Certification from NACE as Corrosion Engineer desired

  • Minium NACE/AMPP CP2 Certification desired

  • Working knowledge with the following standards and regulations

  • ASME B31 (B31.3 and B31.4)

  • NACE Corrosion Standards SP0106, SP0102, TM0212

  • DOT regulations 49 CFR Part 192 (natural gas) and 49 CFR Part 195 (hazardous liquids)

  • Familiar with Microsoft Products

Working Conditions:

  • Preferred office work based in Denver, CO, but San Antonio, TX or Canonsburg, PA are alternatives that could be considered.

  • Travel up to 30%. Overnight travel will be required.

  • Occasional visits to field offices, pipeline ROW’s, well sites, compressor stations, and processing plants, which may have the following conditions:

  • Driving, walking, and standing frequently

  • Exposure to adverse weather

  • Exposure to various hydrocarbon products and chemicals

  • Requirements for appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to be worn.
