Stetson University Part-Time Collections Management Technician TT3100 in DeLand, Florida

The Collections Management Technician supports the Gillespie Museum at Stetson University by cataloging, preserving, storing, and maintaining the museum’s rock, mineral, and fossil collection consisting of approximately 15,000 specimens under the supervision of the Museum Director. The Technician will curate an exhibit or complete a research project related to the collection as a capstone. There will also be limited opportunities to work in outreach (such as participating in programming or giving a presentation) and archives if desired, as well as to write about specimens in the collection for electronic media. The Technician may be assisted at times by the museum’s undergraduate student staff members.

This position is ideal for (but not limited to) early-career recent graduates or current graduate students and is a term-limited position of nine months (approximately late August through early May).

The position is part-time (15-29 hours per week). Number of hours is negotiable. Most work will take place during the museum’s operating hours, T-F 10AM-4PM, with occasional potential Saturday morning or evening hours for special events and programs.

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Employment duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Work with the museum’s mineral, rock, and fossil collection on a variety of collections management tasks, such as:

  • Cataloging, labelling, processing, inventorying, cleaning, researching, photographing, and storing specimens

  • Using a computer database to track the museum’s collection

  • Must be able to climb a step stool and lift objects up to 50 lbs.

  • May be exposed to inhalation hazards and toxic compounds common to mineral collections and museum settings

  • Organize and maintain collection storage areas

  • Assist other staff members with projects related to the museum’s collection

  • Perform other site and position specific duties as assigned

Required Skills

  • Intermediate-level knowledge in the identification of rocks and minerals as well as the use of the tools needed to do so

  • Ability to work safely with rocks and minerals that may be hazardous

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, basic photography, and file manipulation as well as the willingness to learn how to use a collections management software system

  • Self-motivated and able to work independently

  • Detail-oriented and accurate

  • Ability to work with undergraduate student staff members assisting with the collection

Required Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally or nationally accredited college or university in minerology, geology, the Earth sciences, or a museum-related field

  • 2+ years experience studying, curating, and/or collecting minerals (can be formal coursework, job training, or personal experience)

    Ideal Candidate Qualifications:

  • Preference will go to candidates with a graduate degree or current graduate students in museum studies or minerology programs

  • Advanced knowledge in the identification of rocks and minerals as well as the use of the tools needed to do so

  • Experience working with museum collections

  • Knowledge of best-practices for the care and curation of rock, mineral, and fossil collections

  • Knowledge of PastPerfect museum collections software or other database software

  • Desire to increase knowledge in curation and collections management

    Work Environment: The Gillespie Museum is a small museum located in a historic home on the campus of Stetson University in DeLand, FL. Exhibit space is approximately 2,000 square feet. Work will be performed in the museum, most often solo in the museum’s collection storage area. Opportunity for a limited Flexible Work Arrangement is possible, however being physically present to work with the collection most of the time is necessary.
