About the unit
Inpatient Phlebotomy is responsible for collecting blood samples from patients using safe and hygienic techniques. After drawing blood, phlebotomist label and deliver samples to the laboratory for testing. Maintaining accurate records and coordinating with healthcare staff to ensure seamless patient care. This role is crucial for accurate diagnostics, health monitoring, and treatment planning.

Scope of work
Under moderate direction, collects and documents patient specimens to ensure accurate Clinical Laboratory testing. Maintains storeroom, equipment and inventory.

Follows all established procedures for the collection of specimens to ensure accurate testing results. Identifies patients according to procedure 100% of the time. Collects appropriate specimens and volumes.
Maintains appropriate technical and organization skills in order to meet time commitments and provide for staff and patient safety.
Attends and participates in staff in-service meetings, committee meetings, or training sessions as necessary. Completes all competency modules by required due date.
Follows all established safety procedures including universal precautions.
Skilled in all collection procedures (blood cultures, bleeding times, etc.).
Provides accurate documentation for the collection of all patients assigned or documents why the collection was not completed as scheduled. Provides documentation for floor assignments, pager assignments, rest periods and lunch breaks. Provides computer documentation for specimens collected (verify specimens).
Participates in the orientation of new employees.
Demonstrates positive interactions with all hospital staff. Responds to phone and verbal requests for lab results and specimen collection requests in a polite and timely manner.
Assists with meeting the established TAT goals of the lab by timely collection of specimens, verifications, processing and delivery of specimens to technical areas.
Maintains equipment, inventory and storeroom to ensure productive sue of materials and space. Notifies supervisor of low inventory levels. Maintains specimen collection storeroom, laboratory and tray in a neat and orderly manner.

Qualifications
High School Diploma or Equivalent
Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program of 6 months OR more phlebotomy experience
Minimum 6 months phlebotomy experience Preferred
