Manage materials used in automotive chassis systems. Depth of knowledge in one or more basic materials used in automotive chassis components such as metals, resins, elastomers, corrosion protective coatings, and automotive fluids. Understanding of compatibility of basic materials associated with secondary operations such as rubber bonding, electroplating, etc. In addition, the materials engineer works with the vehicle teams and core engineering to resolve material compatibility, warranty, production, and processing problems encountered during the life of a part or subsystem.

Being self-motivated, along with excellent organizational and communication skills, is critical for this position. Ability to work collaboratively with multiple disciplines (Engineering, Research, Laboratory and Design). Assist in the resolution of assembly, manufacturing, durability & field issues and identify and recommend next steps. Liaison between the lab, engineering, and manufacturing.

Responsibilities:

· Demonstrate exemplary Ford OS behaviors: Excellence, Focus, & Collaboration

· Develop and manage materials engineering foundation documents and update to prevent issue recurrence:

· Material and Performance Specifications, Approved Source List (ASL) and Ford Laboratory Test Methods (FLTMs)

· Material FEDE requirements and Design Rules

· Material property data stored in Material Center Database

· Ability to describe the operating environment in which the components/systems function.

· Ability to describe the compatibility of the basic materials within the Ford manufacturing and processing environment including Tier 1 suppliers.

· Review and signoff on engineering drawings and Bill of Materials (BOMs) in Teamcenter (TCe).

· Review and signoff on Design Verification/Product Validation (DV/PV) plans and part performance test reports.

· Provide root cause analysis, materials, and process expertise to support resolution for manufacturing, and field issues, (collaborate with Engineering, Supplier Technical Assistance (STA), Program Vehicle Team (PVT), Purchasing and Research.)

· Support manufacturing site assessments, process development and issue resolution.

· Collaborate with the core engineering functions to develop/update test methods for improved field correlation and prevent recurrence.

· Support material cost reduction initiatives.

Here’s what you’ll need :

Basic Qualifications:

· Bachelor of Science in Materials Science & Engineering, Materials Engineering or Chemical Engineering with an emphasis in metals

· Technically focused internships and/or cooperative assignments in the areas of laboratory failure analysis, and/or metals, resins, or elastomers production or research

· Complete proficiency in Microsoft Office applications

· Possess strong organizational and interpersonal skills

· Possess strong leadership skills, self-motivated and self-driven

Preferred Qualifications:

· 1-2 years exp in automotive or raw materials production industries

· Knowledge of automotive test methods and good laboratory practices

· Overtime, regular days, off days: Monday through Friday 7:00AM to 4:00 PM but must be able to support our flexible test schedule into other shifts and/or weekends

· Shift, 1st, 2nd, 3rd: Day shift

· Necessity for regular attendance: Critical

· Urgency for punctuality: Critical

· Work hours are normally 8 hours per day and 5 days per week, Monday-Friday. Regular attendance of scheduled hours is extremely important. Punctuality and regular attendance are necessary. Must have flexibility of work afternoons to cover weekend testing requirements.

Must pass a pre-employment drug screen, health performance evaluation, PHMV exam and background check.

Must demonstrate professional behavior at all times when dealing with customers, management and co-workers. Must have clear, concise and accurate communications skills in English, both verbal and written. Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk to self or others. Must maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a professional manner. Dependable personal transportation to work site is required.
