BlackBox Network Technician I (Mobile) in DC, United States
Black Box Network Services, the global leader in communication system integration, is looking for a Network Technician with a proven track record in: • Racking and stacking of network devices • Cable patching • Physical layer troubleshooting • Equipment disposal activities • Installing and troubleshooting Cisco and Avaya IP phones
This position will support facilities management, site security and project engagement with a commitment and desire to satisfy our customer by completing all work at the highest level, always striving for perfection. The candidate must be motivated and self-driven for success.
Position Details:
Hourly salary based upon the level of experience & skill-set
Contract position with possible extension(s) or hire
Standard work hours: Mon-Fri 8:00am - 5:00pm (after hours & weekends as needed)
7 day on call rotation every 2-3 weeks
Type / Location: Mobile Worker:D.C Metro/Vicinity

MVR Check required
Candidates must have a valid Driver's License & a dependable vehicle that can support up to a 6 foot ladder
Travel Expectations: up to 3 hours radius of target location
Primary Roles & Responsibilities
The patching cabling between network equipment and customer’s network
The installation of power cables from equipment to power supply in rack/cabinet/closet
The installation, troubleshooting and de-installing cabling & network equipment
Install/swap out devices (e.g., phone, computers, cables, boards, edge routers, switches and etc.)
Install, troubleshoot, and de-install Network General remote Sniffers
Complete all hard and complex Move, Add Change (MAC) requests within the defined service levels
Act as interface between customer’s associates and management
Provide hardware break-fix services for cabling and network infrastructure
Perform onsite call-through, data, voice, website and security testing
Perform back-up testing to ensure all systems are connected to the customer’s network as directed
Support carrier testing of circuits
Assist with facilities efforts
Power and uninterruptable power supply (UPS) restoral
Water problems,
Emergency cooling restoration,
Fire suppression exercises, restoration, and post fire events
Support inventory management activities
Receiving inventory
Tagging of assets
Tracking spares (crash kits)
Ordering inventory
Updating inventory records
Prepare and return damaged equipment
Act as an interface, as needed, between associates at the applicable location and centralized project / operations / MAC management
Education & Experience Requirements:
Minimum 2 years relevant experience
Must be proficient in utilizing technical tools such as Sniffers, BERT testers, cable testers
Requires experience in working in communications closets
Must be able to perform rack and stack activities
Must be able to safely lift heavy objects
Must understand cable patching processes and procedures
Must be familiar with 66 Block and 110 Block cross connect procedures
Must have a basic knowledge of data communications networking.
Must be able to assist in troubleshooting issues
Must understand network terminology
Proven ability to install, terminate & test low voltage cables (CAT 6/CAT 6A) s to include twisted pair cable, coax, power limited tray cable, stranded & solid conductor low voltage cable, single mode & multi-mode fiber optical cables.
Must be familiar with IP phone
Must be able to program Cisco phones
Must be able to install Avaya phones
Must be able to troubleshoot Avaya and Cisco phones
Requires good interpersonal communications skills
Must be able to explain technical issues in a way the customer will understand an issue
Must be able to interpret a customer’s issue in a way that will allow technician to facilitate a resolution
Industry and manufacturer specific experience and/or certifications preferred (examples: BICSI, Panduit, Commscope, Siemens, Corning, Leviton, Ortronics, AV, Fiber Optic, Paging, etc).
Comprehension of terminology pertaining to installation & service of cabling infrastructure for telecom, data, security & wireless systems.
Working knowledge of industry standards including BICSI, ANSI, EIA/TIA, and local and National Electric Code.
When required, healthcare specific certifications and experience (examples: infectious control, safety, bloodborne pathogens certifications, etc.)
Comprehension of publications pertaining to standard cabling for telecom, data, security & wireless systems practices, engineering & Federal, State & local safety standards.
Strong customer/client service orientation with effective communication and interpersonal skills, including tact and diplomacy.
Mechanical aptitude with the ability to read blueprints, architectural, mechanical, and electrical documents.
Proven skills in reliability and dependability demonstrated through completing tasks on time and with minimal supervision, punctual and present for work, informing appropriate individuals when work will not be completed in agreed upon time frame.
Physical Requirements
Heavy Work: May frequently exert force equivalent to lifting up to approximately 50 pounds and/or occasionally exert force equivalent to lifting up to approximately 100 pounds.
Vision: Requires the ability to perceive the nature of objects by the eye.
Near Acuity: Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less.
Midrange: Clarity of vision at distances of more than 20 inches and less than 20 feet.
Far Acuity: Clarity of vision at 20 feet or more.
Peripheral: Ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point.
Depth Perception: Three-dimensional vision. Ability to judge distances and spatial relationships so as to see objects where and as they actually are.
Ability to adjust focus: Ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus.
Color Vision: Ability to identify colors.
Speaking/Hearing: Possesses the ability to give and receive information through speaking and listening skills.
Motor Coordination: While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The incumbent is frequently required to stand; and walk. The incumbent is occasionally required to climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or bend.
