Job Summary:
The Preconstruction Engineering Leader at Trane Technologies is responsible for the overall planning, coordination, and execution of all engineering activities. This role is part of the NA Energy Services Preconstruction team covering the US and Canada. This role will report to the Director of Preconstruction, Energy Services and will provide leadership on complex engineering matters, and implementing departmental processes, procedures, and company standard practices.
The Engineering Leader establishes and manages processes on projects to build and maintain alignment between the engineering design and the project objectives / customer business outcomes.
The Engineering Leader is also responsible for reviewing and approving the proposed energy savings calculations for Trane’s energy performance guarantee projects.

Position Responsibilities and Duties:
Vision:
Ensure the preconstruction teams execute strategy, vision, and business goals.
Infuse vision and purpose into the preconstruction teams and communicate how engineering efforts fit into the big picture.
Leadership & Alignment:
Oversee preconstruction engineering activities, savings, budgets, and energy engineering resources.
Review preconstruction engineering budgets, design schedules and conduct regular analysis to identify risks and opportunities.
Effectively interact with internal and external stakeholders to maintain trusted partnerships and achieve North American Energy Services objectives.
Best-in-Class Execution:
Lead preconstruction engineering activities on complex projects including technical scope definition, bid document creation and review, energy and utility modeling and analysis, supporting at risk performance contracting projects fulfilled in a design-build methodology.
Review schedules, status reports, risk registers, building energy models, energy savings calculations and variance reports for accuracy and improvement opportunities.
Conduct or advise on constructability reviews, design elements, and value analysis. Serve as a document reviewer and coach team members on best practices.
Lead engineering meetings, communicate department updates, and ensure the team is aligned on team priorities.
Utilize a comprehensive understanding of design scope contract risk to develop a mitigation plan for effectively managing design related project risk.
Understand and use the Owner’s business case and steer the design to meet client expectations providing established outcomes.
Recognize and encourage value enhancing design iteration while driving timely design resolution that supports the project budget, project plan and client expectations.
Proactively identify gaps between the agreed basis of design and developing scope creep with the capability to mitigate those scope gaps.
Lead and facilitate workshops to align design production with the needs of construction and driving timely complete design package delivery.
Collaboratively and proactively managing quality into the design with the architect/engineer, and into Trane’s Quality Control (QC) plan; creating design acceptance criteria with design teams.
Market Development & Diversification:
Partner with sales to identify lead opportunities and implement strategies to secure work.
Participate in pursuits/business development activities (proposals, interviews, etc.).
Develop strong networks and attend industry events to promote Trane Technologies services in current and prospective markets.
Minimum Experience and Requirements:
Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Architecture, or related field; or equivalent working experience.
15+ years of construction experience, including extensive estimating and/or preconstruction experience.
Working experience with developing and leading high-performing teams.
Experience with executing department strategic goals and business plans.
Understands internal and external business forces and capitalizes on or mitigates against them.
Thoroughly understands the current labor and material market to make effective business decisions.
Demonstrated technical knowledge of all building systems, constructability, and preconstruction procedures.
Extensive working experience in the design-build delivery process. Knowledge and experience with green design and sustainable methods in construction.
Comprehensive understanding of performance contracting, leveraging energy modeling, utility analysis, and engineering evaluation to support fully guaranteed performance contracts.
Strong computer skills and experience with construction management software (Procore).
Experience with Bluebeam, AutoCAD, and/or Revit, or other similar design software applications.
Demonstrated proficiency in energy modeling software such as Trane Trace 700, Trace 3D Plus, DOE Energy Plus, or other Building Energy Management software.
Excellent organizational and (written and verbal) communication skills – able to infuse purpose in others.
Effectively balances data, intuition, experience, and diverse perspectives in decision-making and problem-solving.
Compensation:
Base Pay Range: $ 150,000 to $195,000
Total compensation for this role will include a commission/incentive plan. Disclaimer: This base pay range is based on US national averages. Actual base pay could be a result of seniority, merit, geographic location where the work is performed.
