The Peer Support Specialist will provide networking, support and connection to substance use services for those disproportionately impacted by unintentional and undetermined overdose deaths. They will provide crisis resolution, self-help, advocacy, care coordination, and housing, education, and socialization assistance. They will also make referrals for substance use, psychiatric, primary care and other services as needed.They will provide outreach services, to community-based organizations reach identified populations of focus

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

• Teach and role model the value of the recovery experience.
• Develop a supportive and positive relationship with others.
• Utilize and teach problem solving techniques with individuals and groups.
• Model effective coping skills and self-help strategies.
• Assess and make referrals for other services as needed.
• Assist with data collection as assigned.
• Complete and monitor participant engagement and conduct follow-up.
• Complete documentation for support services.
• Facilitate groups as needed.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

• High School Diplomapreferred.
• Ability to attend and successfully graduate from Peer Support training approved by Iowa's managed care provider and receivecertification within 6 months of hire date.
• Must have lived experience of substance use; preferred to be in recovery for at least 2 years

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

• Current/past personal experience as a consumer of mental health services; has worked on their own recovery and can share those experiences with others.
• Good working knowledge of mental health services, community resources and how to access these resources.
• Ability to work with a diverse population.
