Position Description

The Visual and Performing Arts Program at The University of Texas at Dallas is pleased to invite applications for a tenure-track faculty position as Assistant Professor of Film and Media Production. The successful applicant will begin in fall 2025 and should specialize in non-fiction across a range of exhibition platforms (theatrical/broadcast/cable/museums or galleries/festivals/screenings/online media).

The successful applicant will be a filmmaker or artist focusing on non-fiction or documentary media (including shorts, features, and/or episodic narratives), have an established or promising record of accomplishment of screenings at festivals or via other exhibition and distribution platforms, and demonstrate an innovative teaching philosophy and practice.

We invite applicants with a vibrant portfolio of work (completed or in progress) and an MFA or PhD in hand at the time of appointment. We are especially interested in artists and filmmakers who will strengthen the program’s integration of scholarship and creative practice. Competitive applicants will exhibit a strong conceptual and technical understanding of the field and a record of training and mentoring undergraduate populations as creative artists.

The appointment commences for the fall 2025 semester.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience: An MFA or PhD or equivalent in Film Studies, Visual Arts or a related discipline is required prior to employment; those with ABD status will be considered at the application/interviewing stage. Candidates are expected to demonstrate the ability to work effectively in a highly collaborative, engaging, and dynamic environment comprised of individuals with a range of backgrounds, skills, and perspectives. We are seeking candidates able to produce research and scholarly or creative achievements that enhance the program and the discipline, and able to deliver high quality teaching using evidence-based practices to effectively engage students from a range of backgrounds and experiences.

Preferred Education and Experience: An MFA or PhD in Film Production and a strong conceptual and technical understanding of the field and a record of training and mentoring undergraduate populations as creative artists.

The Visual and Performing Arts Program

The Visual and Performing Arts ( VPA ) area in the Harry W. Bass Jr. School of Arts, Humanities, and Technology offers interdisciplinary degrees at the undergraduate and graduate levels, with undergraduate concentrations in Art History, Communication, Dance, Film Studies, Interdisciplinary Arts, Music, Theatre, Photo/Video/Digital, and Visual Art. Degree plans allow for sufficient elective credit to afford opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration among faculty and students across the school. Faculty members in other areas of the Humanities include historians, philosophers, creative writers and artists, scholars of visual culture and literature, and more.

The Harry W. Bass Jr. School of Arts, Humanities, and Technology ( AHT ) is a community of scholars, artists, and creative practitioners defined by their creativity, critical thinking, and cross-cultural understanding. Within the context of a Carnegie R1 doctoral research institution, AHT fosters the fluid movement between traditional disciplines and cutting-edge experimental investigation of emerging technologies. · Statement of teaching philosophy describing their conceptualizations of teaching and learning, and teaching and assessment methods, and how their teaching practices will engage students from a range of backgrounds and experiences.

· Research statement describing past, present, and future research, including how they mentor (or will mentor) student researchers and foster (or will foster) collaborative research environments.

· A “demo reel” up to 5-minutes or a “portfolio” that includes 10 recent projects (which should specify the role(s) of the applicant in the work—such as Producer, Director, Editor, etc.

· A writing/publication sample (optional).

· Full contact information for at least three academic or professional references.

Priority will be given to completed applications received by 11/1/2024. Reviews will continue until the position is filled or the search is closed on 5/31/2025.
