Job Summary

This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time, 9-month, academic year, Medical Laboratory Technologist position for the Student Health Services at Oregon State University ( OSU ).

The Student Health Services ( SHS ) mission is to provide leadership for the health of the University community. This position contributes to the mission of SHS through teamwork and collaboration, participates in organizational committees, provides University outreach, and strives to contribute to the academic success of OSU students.

The purpose of this position at Student Health Services ( SHS ) is to perform a variety of laboratory technical and clerical duties to assist clinicians in the diagnosis and treatment of medical problems and diseases.

Key Responsibilities

60% – LABORATORY PROCEDURES & PATIENT TESTING

15% – EQUIPMENT / SYSTEMS – USE , QUALITY CONTROL & MAINTENANCE

What We Require

A Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology; OR a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical or Microbiology plus one year of experience in a clinical laboratory performing a variety of standard testing and examination procedures under general supervision in support of professional medical laboratory personnel; OR two years of experience equivalent to a Medical Laboratory Technician 2 in a clinical laboratory performing a variety of standard testing and examination procedures under general supervision in support of professional medical laboratory personnel.

What You Will Need

  • Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist ( MLS ) or Medical Laboratory Technician ( MLT ) certification by American Society of Clinical Pathologists ( ASCP ), American Medical Technologists ( AMT ), H.E.W, or equivalent.

  • Work history of excellent customer service skills.

  • Ability to perform phlebotomy.

  • Experience with a variety of automated and manual testing methodologies.

  • Current basic life support certification, or the ability to obtain this within 60 days of hiring.

  • Proficiency in navigating Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word.

  • Ability to work independently after fully trained.

  • Ability to prioritize work and multitask, work at a rapid pace with multiple interruptions and frequent re-prioritization of workload.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

  • This is a 9-month position and is required to share evening and weekend work schedules with other laboratory staff within a defined schedule.

  • This position is deemed “essential” and may be required to report to work during emergency university closures or work curtailments.

  • This position requires a high degree of public contact in person and via telephone daily.

  • This position is exposed to communicable and infectious diseases, chemicals and reagents daily.

  • Experiences interaction with emotionally stressed patients periodically.
