Job Summary

The Department of Veterinary Biological Sciences in the Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a full-time 1.00 FTE , 12-month, fixed-term Assistant Professor (Clinical) with reappointment at the discretion of the Department Head or a tenure-track Assistant Professor position depending on qualifications.

This position serves as a faculty veterinary clinical pathologist. The academic home for this position is in the Department of Biomedical Sciences in the Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine at Oregon State University, with a joint appointment in the Oregon Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory.

The Department of Biomedical Sciences is an integral component of the Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine which includes the Oregon Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory ( OVDL ), and the Lois Bates Acheson Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

Faculty members in the Department of Biomedical Sciences provide instruction to students in a professional veterinary medical program leading to a DVM degree, MS and PhD degree programs and, also provide diagnostic services through the Oregon Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory ( OVDL ) to the benefit of practicing veterinarians, wildlife officials, livestock and poultry industries, and pet owners.

Our faculty also maintain active research devoted to solving the world’s most challenging animal and human health issues. Our research is of economic and public health significance, aimed at improving human and animal health and welfare, and of particular importance to the State of Oregon and the nation.

The incumbent will participate in clinical pathology service through the Oregon Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, along with instruction of veterinary students and pathology residents. The incumbent will also participate in scholarly activity and serve on appropriate academic committees. The OVDL is Oregon’s AAVLD -accredited laboratory and a member of the National Animal Health Laboratory Network. The laboratory has a diverse caseload providing outstanding opportunities to teach enthusiastic students in the professional curriculum and our clinical pathology residency program.

Key Responsibilities

55% Diagnostic Service (40% for tenure-track):

Provide diagnostic clinical pathology services to the Oregon Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory ( OVDL ), with an emphasis on cytology and hematology diagnostic work. Provide support/consultation for laboratory activities such as new assay validation, QC, training, and lab management. If candidate has other diagnostic specializations/certifications, may also provide some diagnostic service in other areas of OVDL if desired.

30% Teaching (20% for tenure-track):

Contribute to the professional, graduate, and undergraduate curricula of the Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine and the University, particularly in teaching pre-clinical Clinical Pathology and General Pathology. Instruct 4th year veterinary students in the techniques of clinical pathology during core rotations.

10% Scholarly Activity (35% for tenure-track):

Pursue discovery in scholarly activity through collaborative research efforts, present new information at relevant meetings, and publish in peer-reviewed journals, books, and other media.

5% University Service:

Share in committee and other service activities of the College and the University.

What You Will Need

  • DVM or equivalent.

  • Diplomate status or eligibility for taking the boards of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (Clinical Pathology) or the European College of Veterinary Clinical Pathologists

  • Experience in diagnostic clinical pathology, teaching, and research.

  • The ability to effectively communicate with diagnostic laboratory clientele, veterinary, graduate, and undergraduate students, pathology residents, staff, and colleagues.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
