The incumbent operates a variety of plant equipment and machinery and performs laboratory tests and other analyses relative to wastewater treatment processes. The work is performed under the direct supervision of a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator II and the general supervision of the Chief Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator with some leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgment in planning and carrying out the details of the work. Does related work as required.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: City (Operator I)Must possess high school diploma or high school equivalency diploma (GED).Must possess a Grade 1A or higher Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator certificate issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and retain said license for the duration of employment.SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of an operator’s license issued by the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles. The incumbent must obtain a CDL Class B license within one year of the date of appointment and retain said license for the duration of employment. DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS : City (Trainee) The work involves responsibility for learning the duties and routines in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant utilizing an activated sludge process. This is a trainee position in the competitive class for which the incumbent will serve a one-year traineeship, during which time the incumbent undergoes on-the-job training to become qualified as an operator of a wastewater treatment plant. The work is performed under the direct supervision of a qualified operator. This is a trainee position in the competitive class for which candidates are selected on the basics of general intelligence, basic knowledge of elementary chemistry and general science and mechanical aptitude. A Water Treatment Plant Operator/Trainee undergoes a year of on-the-job training to become a qualified operator. Upon successful completion of the appropriate certificate, trainees will be appointed operators without further examination. A Water Treatment Plant Operator performs routine but important work under the direct supervision involving responsibility for the efficient operation and maintenance of a Water Treatment Plant.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Cortlandville1.Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR TOWN OF CORTLANDVILLE:Possession of an operator’s license issued by the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles.
