NOTE: If a part-time position becomes full-time, an incumbent may be appointed to the full-time position without further canvassing.RESIDENCE REQUIREMENT: Candidates must have been legal residents of Cortland County or one of the seven contiguous counties of Broome, Cayuga, Chenango, Madison, Onondaga, Tioga, or Tompkins for at least one month immediately preceding the date of examination. Preference in certification may be given to successful candidates who are residents of the municipality for one month prior to the date of certification.DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for the enforcement of rules and regulations governing the custody, security, conduct, discipline, safety and general wellbeing of inmates in a county correctional facility. The duties involve considerable inmate contact and supervision in a work, recreation or learning environment. Work procedures are well defined but incumbents must be alert to the possibilities of emergency situations arising and exercise sound judgement when problems occur. The work is performed under general supervision of a higher ranking officer with leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgment in dealing with day to day situations in the facility. Does related work as required.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.-A COPY OF THE HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA OR HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY DIPLOMA MUST BE SUBMITTED WITH THE APPLICATION.ANTICIPATED ELIGIBILITY- AGE AND EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:According to Civil Service Law, section 54 which became effective September 4, 2024, applicants who are within 12 months of meeting the minimum age or attaining the minimum educational requirements following the date of examination, may take the civil service exam, but will be restricted from certification until such a time that the minimum age or educational requirements are met.SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate to the vehicles operated. Failure to maintain a NYS driver’s license including driving privileges throughout employment will result in disciplinary action or dismissal.NOTE: All permanent appointments to this position are subject to satisfactorily completing training standards prescribed by the State Commission of Correction. (Eff. 9/1/82.)NOTE: To operate magnetometer, the incumbent must possess a Peace Officer certificate at time of appointment.CRIMINAL HISTORY: No person may be appointed as a Correction Officer who has been convicted of a felony or of any offense in any other jurisdiction, which if committed in New York State would constitute a felony. A person may also be barred from appointment if he/she has been convicted of a misdemeanor or any offense in any other jurisdiction which, if the County Personnel Officer determines, that the employment of such person is not in the best interest of the department. As of April 28, 2023 the physical agility test will be waived for all candidates. Those candidates who are subsequently offered employment will be required to pass a medical exam. Finally, a psychological test will be required. Failure on any qualifying test will bar candidates from appointment. We reserve the right to schedule these examinations for only as many candidates as necessary for vacancies as they may occur during the life of the eligible list.SUBJECT OF EXAMINATION:There is no written multiple-choice test. This is an online examination questionnaire that asks questions about your education, training, and work experience. This online questionnaire IS YOUR EXAMINATION. If you meet the minimum qualifications, you will receive a rating based upon an evaluation of your training and experience against the duties of the position being tested. •First Step - Candidates must complete a Civil Service Application (Applications can be obtained online: Exam-or-Job-Application) and return it to the Cortland County Civil Service office, along with a copy of your high school diploma or high school equivalency diploma, on or before the last filing date of January 23, 2025 at 4:30pm.Second Step - After the last filing date, approved candidates will be sent a notice containing directions to a website address needed to complete a Training and Experience Questionnaire.Third Step - The Training and Experience (T&E) Questionnaire will be available on February 1, 2025. Approved candidates will be required to complete and submit this questionnaire between February 1, 2025 and midnight, February 28, 2025. Candidates will not be able to claim any credit for training or experience to be gained after the application filing deadline of January 23, 2025.Candidates who fail to submit their questionnaire by midnight, February 28, 2025will not receive a score and not be added to the eligible list. Note: Individuals can participate in Correction Officer Examinations for other municipal civil service agencies to maximize their opportunity for appointment.
