Guthrie Laboratory Technical Assistant - Laboratory Administration - Per Diem in Corning, New York

Position Summary:

Processing technician affirms specimen identification, lab orders and ensures specimens are received in department in the computer system and physically. Performs other related computer and clerical functions under supervision. The processing technician will work primarily in the sample preparation area but may be assigned to various tasks in other areas of the laboratory. The technician may be required to perform phlebotomy or other specimen collections.

Education, License & Cert:

One to two years of college science courses is highly desired, and/or extensive experience in a clinical laboratory. Computer familiarity with keyboards and system navigation is required. Medical terminology and/or knowledge of basic anatomy is required.

Experience:

Prior experience in a hospital or clinical laboratory environment is highly preferred.

Essential Functions:

  1. Reviews all incoming specimens to assure proper identification of samples with correct labels and required information (points of identification) are uniformly present.

  2. Properly examines all specimens and specimen orders submitted (blood, urines, and other body fluids or tissues) for proper labeling and necessary information on both specimen and order.

  3. Communicates discrepancies in labeling or orders to the appropriate department and completes the required forms for tracking.

  4. Processes (centrifuges, separate, aliquots etc) all specimens from all sources and ensures they are dispatched properly to correct testing location.

  5. Organizes work according to workstation plan, including expediting STAT testing.

  6. Registers and orders lab work as necessary, ensuring the correct entry of lab location, diagnoses registration information to ensure correct account entry and auto faxing is performed,

  7. Brings any problem of a technical nature or questionable specimen integrity to the attention of the Supervisor or designee.

  8. Keeps up to date with knowledge of specimen preparation, anticoagulants and preservatives, specimen transport, processing technique and storage.

  9. Properly answers telephone inquiries using telephone etiquette and refers as needed.

  10. Maintains a clean, neat work area during and at the end of scheduled work period, ensuring bench cleaning is documented.

  11. Assists in finding missing specimens or add ‐ on specimens.

  12. Works the pending lists for inpatients and outpatients and clears the list with the appropriate comments or does other follow up as needed.

  13. Follows current bucket checking protocol for confirming the content and receipt of drop off specimens within the laboratory.

  14. Thoroughly checks each bucket to ensure the removal of all specimens and paperwork from each bucket each and every time.

  15. Stores buckets in appropriate designated location. Ensures they are cleaned, and bags replaced regularly. Completes bucket paperwork as needed.

  16. Stores problem samples in designated refrigerator and/or proper storage location. Provides information is provided to the staff that will follow through on these samples.

  17. Reviews supply levels and reports shortages to the Supervisor.

  18. Maintains a professional, mature, positive attitude and demeanor while on the job.

  19. Observes proper safety practices in the performance of job duties.

  20. Follows established lab policies and procedures.

  21. Performs other clerical and technical duties as instructed or requested.

  22. May be required to learn and perform phlebotomy or other specimen collections.

  23. Other duties as assigned.

    Pay Scale: $15.91-$22.81/hr
