Summary
This position provides technical and administrative work in fire/life safety code inspection and compliance for the City of Coral Gables Fire Department.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification.
Conducts field inspection of new construction sites; examines construction plans, shop drawings, and specifications to determine if the building is constructed in accordance with applicable fire/life safety codes and standards; prepares investigative field reports of violations; conducts follow-up inspections to document corrective action as required.
Conducts fire/life safety code inspections of existing occupancies as required by the State Fire Marshal in conjunction with other state and local agencies; prepares reports of findings and explains fire/life safety codes and standards.
Conducts field inspections of existing occupancies on an annual or as needed basis as determined by the supervisor; prepares reports of findings and issues violation notices as required. Receives and responds to complaints of code violations; conducts field inspection to verify and determine the nature of violation; prepares and issues violation notices as required.
Provides information to interested parties concerning fire/life safety codes and standards; confers with and assists departmental officials in the interpretation and application of fire/life safety codes.
Maintains records of field inspection activities; completes reports of inspected occupancies and all incidental enforcement work and submits reports to supervisors.
Conducts public education presentations, fire drills, and evaluates evacuation plans.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
High school diploma or the equivalent.
State of Florida Fire Safety Inspector Certificate required.
One (1) year of experience reviewing fire plans preferred.
One (1) year of experience in fire inspection, fire prevention, or related field preferred.
One (1) year experience with Mobile Eyes Inspection Software, Microsoft Excel, or equivalent preferred.
Completion of required state and local fire safety training programs.
Valid Florida Driver’s License.
An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience to be determined by the Fire Chief.
HOLIDAYS: 14 days including 2 floating days and birthday (12 hours pay per day).
SICK LEAVE : 132 hours annually.
ANNUAL LEAVE: 112 hours in the first year of employment, increasing up to 252 after 25 years. Employees must take 48 hours of annual leave each year.
BEREAVEMENT LEAVE: 2 shifts for the death of an immediate family member in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement and the City's Personnel Rules & Regulations.
MEDICAL INSURANCE: City contributes a flat amount of $665.24 towards medical insurance.
DENTAL INSURANCE: Available to all employees through payroll deduction.
LIFE INSURANCE: Term Life insurance equal to 1 x annual salary, fully paid by the City.
VOLUNTARY BENEFITS: Several plans available, such as Short-Term Disability, Life Insurance and Critical Illness policies through payroll deductions.
LEGAL SERVICES: Legal Service plan available at a cost to employees through payroll deductions.
DEFERRED COMPENSATION: Employees are given the option to defer a portion of their pre-tax salary into the 457 Deferred Compensation Program.
UNIFORM ALLOWANCE: $600 annually.
TUITION REIMBURSEMENT: $1,500 per semester ($6,000 maximum annually) for approved college degree coursework.
EDUCATION INCENTIVE PAY: Employees who have an Associate’s degree receive an additional $35 per pay period and $65 for a Bachelor’s degree. Paramedics are also entitled to additional compensation if completed Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and one (1) other approved course.
RECREATIONAL USE: Employee, spouse and immediate family members seventeen (17) years of age and under are entitled to the benefits below:
Venetian Pool – No charge for daily admission.
Tennis Centers – No charge for daily court fees.
Youth Center – 50% off residential rates for memberships and 50% off camps and other programs.
Golf at Biltmore & Granada:
Monday through Friday – no charge.
Saturday, Sunday and Holidays:
- Before Noon – Twilight fees apply - After Noon – No charge (cart fees apply at all times)POST EMPLOYMENT HEALTH PLAN: The City deposits $950 annually into an individual account for each employee. Monies from these accounts may be used to pay premiums or medical expenses after retirement.
PENSION: Mandatory employee contribution of 10% of salary. Vesting period is 10 years.
