The Development Officer is responsible for the creation and execution of an annual plan of action designed to capture philanthropic support from alumni and non-alumni individuals, corporations, foundations, etc. to meet the needs of the College of Engineering & School of Architecture. The Development Officer is responsible for achieving a yearly cash goal and will report to the Senior Director of Development. The Development Associate will also work closely with the deans, faculty, directors, and other administrators in the College of Engineering and the School of Architecture.

Essential Responsibilities:

• Assist with the development and implementation of a strategic fundraising plan each year for the Colleges in collaboration with the Senior Director of Development and the Deans; this plan will include measurable objectives and courses of action for all significant activity during the year.

• Identify, cultivate, and solicit gifts from individuals, corporations, foundations, and professional groups in support of strategic College(s) priorities.

• Schedule joint prospect visits with the Senior Director of Development, the Dean(s), or other members of College’s administration or faculty when appropriate.

• Ensure that past donors are regularly communicated with and re-solicited on a timely basis.

• Work with volunteers to assist in identifying, rating, cultivating, and soliciting donors.

• Maintain a regular schedule of domestic travel to visit individuals, foundations, and corporations capable of making significant gifts.

• Meet performance objectives by maintaining a high level of development activity that results in funding and in the identification of “new” prospects each year.

• Seek to maximize giving opportunities through a consistent program of prospect outreach. All contacts are to be recorded in the prospect tracking and contact reporting database.

• Provide management and support of volunteer-based development efforts and assist the Dean(s) in the recruitment of targeted individuals for related boards.

• Prepare written proposals for prospects and donors.

• Collaborate with respective POA and research teams to build out a strong pipeline internally and externally.

• Align efforts with the Digital Engagement and Philanthropy Experience team to maximize outcomes.

• Prepare support documentation for gift acceptance in accordance with UM accounting procedures.

• Perform related duties such as attending meetings, training sessions, etc. as required or deemed appropriate to the accomplishment of the responsibilities and functions of the office.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree.

  • Minimum three years of relevant work experience. Four years of fundraising or related experience preferred. Equivalent combinations of education/experience may be considered.

  • Must be knowledgeable about fundraising.

  • Candidate must have an excellent command of the English language; excellent oral and written communication skills are required, as well as strong interpersonal skills.

  • Candidate must be organized, creative, energetic, and assertive.

  • Ability to take initiative and work independently.

  • Exceptional work ethic and commitment are essential.

  • Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge a plus.

  • Ability to work some weekends and evenings as needed.

  • Excel, Microsoft Word essential.

  • Knowledge of business and management principles.

  • Ability to direct, manage, implement, and evaluate department operations.

  • Ability to establish department goals, and objectives that support the strategic plan.

  • Ability to effectively plan, delegate and/or supervise the work of others.

  • Ability to lead, motivate, develop, and train others.
