Position summary

As an Associate Director, Data Scientist (Machine Learning Engineer), you will be responsible for implementing and fine-tuning cutting-edge machine learning models using healthcare data (i.e., both structured and unstructured data from operations, claims, and medical charts) to solve complex problems, drive innovation, and increase productivity across our organization. You will work closely with other data scientists, software engineers, and product managers to design, build, and deploy ML-based solutions to enhance productivity and intelligence across utilization management and other health plan services. Your contributions will be used for operational improvement via automation and reducing healthcare administrative costs. Azure is our primary cloud provider and experience using Azure AI Services is highly preferred.

Essential functions

  • Lead Machine Learning Operations (MLOps) to streamline the process of bringing a machine learning model into production, as well as maintenance and monitoring.

  • Utilize Azure Cloud Resources to engineer and deploy Data Science’s models to ensure quality, reliability, and scalability.

  • Construct advanced SQL queries to scrutinize healthcare data, track key product usage metrics, build feature sets, generate reports and perform complex analytics tasks to improve our product, and investigate business problems to identify novel solutions. 

  • Influence and contribute to Evolent’s core products by architecting key components for automating and simplifying the AI-creation process of turning raw data into smart decisions. This includes automation of data transformation, feature engineering, algorithm selection, developing and maintaining data pipelines, and model optimization. 

  • Collaborate with a team of data scientists, clinicians, and engineers to drive the development and maturation of our AI solutions.

  • Establish processes for rapid impact, feedback, and iteration of solutions with Evolent's internal clinical staff and customers 

  • Work closely with our product and innovation teams, as well as business stakeholders spread across various locations in the US and India. 

  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to define AI project requirements and objectives, ensuring alignment with overall business goals.

  • Conducting research to stay current with the latest advancements in AI and machine learning techniques to identify opportunities to leverage them in our products and services.

  • Developing clear and concise documentation, including technical specifications, user guides, and presentations, to communicate complex AI concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Contributing to the establishment of best practices and standards for ML development within the organization.

  • Providing technical mentorship and guidance to junior team members.

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in data science, computer science, or a related field

  • 2 or more years of experience developing in a Cloud Environment (AWS, GCS, Azure, etc). Azure is highly preferred.

  • 2 or more years of professional experience developing and deploying machine-learning (ML) systems

  • 2 or more years of experience with GitHub Actions and CI/CD

  • 2 or more years advanced experience in SQL, including experience writing new and efficient SQL code and complex analytical queries

  • Proficiency in Python and have experience with machine learning libraries and frameworks such as Scikit-Learn, XGBoost, TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Keras

  • Strong knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and software engineering principles

  • Knowledge of software development methodologies, such as Agile or Scrum, and version control

  • High ability to think critically and creatively to develop innovative AI solutions with a passion for solving problems within healthcare that have tangible impacts on patient lives

  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to effectively convey complex technical concepts to a diverse audience

  • Possess a proactive mindset, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment

  • Medical concept knowledge with codes from standard ontologies (SNOMED CT, LOINC, RxNorm, ICD-10, etc.) is preferred

  • Experience using Kubernetes and Docker is preferred

  • Experience building REST APIs for AI work and knowledge of microservices architecture is preferred

  • Participation in open-source community projects is preferred

  • Experience developing in Azure ML Studio is preferred

Technical Requirements:

We require that all employees have the following technical capability at their home: High speed internet over 10 Mbps and, specifically for all call center employees, the ability to plug in directly to the home internet router. These at-home technical requirements are subject to change with any scheduled re-opening of our office locations.

The expected base salary/wage range for this position is $81,600 - 125,000. This position is also eligible for a bonus component that would be dependent on pre-defined performance factors. As part of our total compensation package, Evolent is proud to offer comprehensive benefits (including health insurance benefits) to qualifying employees. All compensation determinations are based on the skills and experience required for the position and commensurate with experience of selected individuals, which may vary above and below the stated amounts.
