Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Scope of Position:

Provide manufacturing support for optical waveguide manufacturing process as well as support cost reduction, controls improvement and capacity projects. Technician that has the ability to troubleshoot low and medium voltage systems, troubleshoot using PLCs, and support manufacturing processes and projects. Provides first, second and third level troubleshooting of equipment/process issues. Works hands-on with manufacturing equipment and activities. Identifies and supports process improvements. Uses judgment, experience, and initiative to resolve problems and make recommendations.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Production support for any throughput or safety items that may be hindering output.

  • Resolution to ongoing chronic issues that require process monitoring and data analysis to implement robust controls solutions.

  • Works closely with development groups to support new product deployment.

  • Provide inputs for detailed documentation at the completion of projects.

  • 1st point of contact to provide comprehensive electrical/controls/mechanical/equipment troubleshooting of production equipment issues.

  • Responsible for monitoring area performance, identifying equipment/process issues, and following issues to closure.

  • Simultaneously managing and troubleshooting multiple issues using sound technical principles to drive resolution with the ability to prioritize issues based on the overall plant’s needs.

  • Support Preventive Maintenance and equipment upkeep efforts.

  • Directing maintenance personnel in the repairs, maintenance, testing, installation, and debugging of equipment.

  • Stay up to date with training from engineering and technical SME (Subject Matter Expert) areas, on new processes/equipment and/or on procedural changes.

  • Work with a variety of groups including operators, other support technicians, engineers, and external trades to coordinate and direct equipment startup, repair, troubleshooting, and process changes.

  • Contribute to keep production teams current on processes, equipment, and procedures.

  • Reference supporting documentation to complete tasks and report documentation discrepancies that need to be updated.

  • As needed, develop, document, and deliver training packages for new or modified equipment to production and support groups in the plant.

  • Assisting engineers in the design, troubleshooting, documentation, and implementation of new or modified production equipment.

  • Maintain the systems and actions necessary to ensure compliance with department certification programs, quality system audit program, and ISO 14000 registration.

  • Champion a safe work environment and help enforce all housekeeping and safety regulations.

Hours of work/work schedule/flextime:

  • 12 hours rotating shifts.

Required Education/ Years of Experience:

  • 2-year technical degree with 2 or more years of experience.

  • OR 5 years of technical experience in lieu of a degree.

Required Skills:

  • Experience working with and troubleshooting process equipment.

  • Experienced in electrical system troubleshooting including low and medium voltage systems, PLCs, temperature controls safety systems, etc.

  • Experience with mechanical system troubleshooting including pneumatic controls, flow control, material handling, etc.).

  • Experienced in troubleshooting and repair of electrical and pneumatic controls including use of test equipment.

  • Experienced in troubleshooting and repair of simple to complex mechanical equipment.

  • Familiarity with sensors, thermocouples (TCs), switches, motors, and actuators.

  • Ability to read/understand electrical, mechanical drawings, and machine specifications.

Desired Skills:

  • Knowledge of PLC Control systems: Allen-Bradley, Beckhoff, Siemens or similar system.

Soft Skills:

  • Works well in a team environment, is a “self-starter” and “results oriented”.

  • Acts and makes decisions in the best interest of the team.

  • Complies with all policies and procedures of the plant.

  • Works well with other disciplines (IT, mechanical, and process engineering) to fully understand manufacturing system functionality and design requirements.

  • Ability to lead peers and direct work of a team.

The range for this position is $55,491.00 - $76,301.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
