System One Structural Bridge Engineer in Columbus, Ohio

Job Description: Structural Bridge Engineer Location: Cleveland, Columbus or Cincinnati, Ohio

Our Ohio offices are looking for a highly motivated Structural/Bridge Engineer with 5-15 years of bridge design experience to join our established transportation practice. This position offers the chance to work on exciting and challenging projects in a unique and dynamic work environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Structural Design and Analysis: Perform and oversee the structural design and analysis of bridges, including the preparation of construction plans, project specifications, and quantity/cost estimates.

  • Project Collaboration: Collaborate closely with other teams on multi-disciplinary projects, including bridge, roadway, traffic, rail, site, and public transit projects.

  • Technical Leadership: Function as a lead technical design engineer and/or project manager, working independently while supervising and mentoring less experienced engineers to develop their technical and interpersonal skills.

  • Project Pursuits: Participate in new project pursuits, including preparing qualifications and technical proposals, developing Scope of Service and Fee Proposals, and networking through professional society events.

  • Document Preparation: Prepare or direct the preparation and modification of reports, specifications, plans, construction schedules, and designs for bridge design projects.

  • Design Review: Review project designs for compliance with engineering principles, company standards, client contract requirements, and related specifications.

  • Technical Guidance: Provide technical guidance on unusual or complex problems and seek supervisory approval on proposed plans for projects.

  • Quality and Accuracy: Ensure accuracy in engineering design and plan preparation, quality presentation, thoroughness, follow-through, and efficient conformance to budgets, schedules, and company standards.

  • Project Management: Show understanding of team management, develop project scopes of work, estimate manpower needs, prepare CPM schedules, and track project progress.

  • Professional Development: Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies.

  • Consulting and Advising: Serve as a staff advisor and consultant on technical specialties.

  • Site Inspections: Perform site inspections of existing bridges to determine conditions and evaluate conformance with contract plans and specifications during construction projects.

    Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from an accredited college or university.

  • Minimum of 5 years of bridge design experience.

  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel), and experience with engineering design software such as AutoCAD (desirable), MicroStation and ORD (required), Staad.Pro, MathCAD, LARSA, and other structural analysis systems.

  • Registration as a licensed Professional Engineer in Ohio.

  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to engage multiple perspectives and encourage reciprocal learning among team members.

  • Commitment to fostering a workplace that values diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree (MCE/MSCE) in Structural Engineering.

  • Strong background in developing Type Study Reports and designing bridges for ODOT and other local transportation agencies.

  • Familiarity with the structural/bridge design process through the application of AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications and ODOT Bridge Manual code requirements.

  • Design-Build experience.

  • Local candidates preferred.
