Definition

The selected incumbent for the Recreation and Parks Assistant Director position will oversee and coordinate the operational and administrative functions for the sports and aquatics section of the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department. The ideal and preferred candidate for this position is an incumbent with experience in sports and aquatics administrative and management functions.

Under administrative direction, is responsible for assisting the Recreation and Parks Director in the administration and coordination of all Recreation and Parks functions, and for providing supervision over the management staff; performs related duties as required.

Examples of Work

(May not include all of the duties performed.)

Assists the Director in the establishment of departmental objectives, goals, policies, and procedures;

Oversees and coordinates all administrative functions within the Department including fiscal management, human resources management, union negotiations, property management, marketing and fundraising management, safety management, information services, and the permit office;

Oversees and coordinates all recreation and related programs within the department including community recreation, summer camps and playgrounds, outdoor education, special populations, aquatics, senior recreation, adult and youth sports, and regional and local special events, programs, and activities;

Oversees and coordinates all planning and design, forestry and horticulture, and maintenance and construction functions within the Department including park planning, development, and design, land acquisition and usage, construction management and compliance, and urban forestry inspection, maintenance, and removal;

Oversees and coordinates all operations and maintenance activities of all municipal golf courses within the Department including their finances, promotional and marketing strategies, contract services, capital improvements, golf professional activities, and concessions;

Oversees the management of all leases, contracts, and legislation for the Department;

Reviews and/or assists in the preparation of the General Fund and Capital Improvements Budgets and program fee structures for the department;

Meets with community groups and other interested parties for the purpose of exchanging information regarding recreation interests, needs, and available and future programming;

Represents the Director at various conferences and public, staff, and City meetings; makes speeches and presentations at these conferences and meetings;

Prepares documents, correspondence, and comprehensive and technical reports for own or the Director's signature;

Acts for the Director in his or her absence.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a bachelor's degree and five (5) years of management experience in parks, recreation, cultural or performing arts, natural resources, or a closely related field. Substitution(s): A master's degree in business administration, public administration, or a closely related field may be substituted for one (1) year of the required experience
