Publishing Production Specialist, ACS Publications Date: May 22, 2024 Location: Columbus, OH, US, 43202 Company: American Chemical Society The Publications Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS) publishes more than 70 peer-reviewed journals (and growing) and a series of books focused on chemistry and chemistry-related topics. The Division has domestic facilities in Washington, D.C. and Columbus OH, as well as worldwide operations in a growing number of international locations including but not limited to the UK, Singapore, India, and China. The Division's Global Production Operations (GPO) department based in Columbus manages all aspects of the editing, production, and web posting of peer-reviewed submissions accepted for publication across the portfolio. We are in search of a Senior Manuscript Processor (MP) to join our high-performing team in Columbus, OH. The MP is responsible for ensuring the quality of published articles and issues both on Web and in print and contributes, directly or indirectly, to page composition activities as needed. Additionally, the MP is responsible for providing customer support in performing a variety of office-related tasks and support functions for the journals. The three primary day-to-day functions of the MP are as follows: Validates the editing and production quality of edited manuscripts, and uploads completed articles to the web. Uses troubleshooting skills to determine if problem papers can be resolved locally or require external intervention. Ensures accurate and timely processing of articles to meet critical publication deadlines. Posts articles (60,000) and issues (1800) to the Web; performs quality checks and sends proofs for corrections to problematic articles. Uses proprietary composition tools to adjust page layout as needed. Receives, prioritizes, and distributes incoming email concerning galley proofs, author correspondence on proof corrections, and copyright forms. Manages reminder process for galley corrections from authors. Provides customer support to external and internal customers, utilizing technical skills for problem solving. Supports system upgrades, providing testing and feedback. Maintains general knowledge of ACS products and processes to handle customer questions and resolve problems. Monitors system performance, quickly reporting issues that arise. This schedule for this position is Monday through Friday, during core business hours. Currently, all staff, including this position, are expected to work on-site a minimum of 2 days per week, with the option of working remotely no more than 3 days per week. Required Skills: Conversant in publishing processes and workflows. Demonstrated skill in using Microsoft Office Products, Adobe Acrobat and a basic understanding of HTML and XML. Ability to multi-task effectively using great organizational and prioritization skills. Ability to maintain a high-quality focus with attention to detail that is reflected in work products. Clear and concise written and oral communication skills. Good general working knowledge of computer equipment, systems, and software with the ability to learn and adapt as technology evolves. Excellent customer service skills. This is an interactive position which demands the ability to ask questions, synthesize answers, and escalate issues - all without compromising quality or deadlines. Required Experience: High School Diploma (required), Bachelor's Degree (preferred). 2 years of directly relevant experience within the publishing industry or a comparable production role. History of success in a role that demands juggling multiple tasks under pressure with a high ability to prioritize and self-manage.
