Job Summary
Over the last eight years, Battelle has been making a significant investment in the development of innovative technologies for per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). We are currently seeking a PFAS Chemist to join our expanding team. This position will provide task leadership for the execution of research and client PFAS analytical chemistry project work. This position is located in Columbus, OH.
The Environmental Solutions Division within the Environment and Agriculture Business Line conducts research, characterization, and remediation of environmental contamination, and designs and implements environmentally sustainable remedial technologies. As a Chemist III, the selected individual will provide chemistry support for the development and deployment of innovative technologies for PFAS, including analytical, sampling, treatment, and destruction research and development.
The successful candidate will have the following characteristics:
Knowledge of PFAS analytical methods, including EPA Methods 1633 and 1621
Experience determining the appropriate analysis methods, identifies problems, and develops and implements innovative solutions to solve complex problems.
Experience with PFAS forensics, fingerprinting or background evaluations
Experience with high resolution mass spectrometry
Understanding of scientific principles, theories, and methods for conducting the environmental fate and transport; and treatment effectiveness studies
Experience with study design and execution of research projects, data processing and interpretation of results
Evaluate the fate of contaminants of concern in wastewater treatment plants, drinking water treatment plants, and other environmental matrices.
Knowledge of partitioning behavior of contaminants in different environmental systems
Be a team player, have a positive attitude and eagerness to take on new and technically challenging tasks.
Responsibilities
The selected individual will support complex and innovative chemistry projects to effectively characterize contamination in a wide array of media, and design and implement remedial systems to treat the contamination. Examples of responsibilities based on current and anticipated projects include:
Providing support with PFAS forensics projects.
Lead bench/lab scale experiments under the direction of the lead Chemist, with strict adherence to safety procedures.
Develop study designs to address research objectives.
Direct the sample analysis and responsible for required data collection following required quality controls.
Perform data analysis and interpretation of results.
Presentation of study results to the project team/clients/conferences.
Develop journal articles based on technical results. Participate in the development of written client deliverables.
Prepare Quality Assurance Project Plans (QAPP) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
May provide technical direction to and coordinate the efforts of other scientists, engineers, and technical support staff in the performance of assigned projects within time and budget constraints.
Key Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry or a related field with 5 years of experience in laboratory, R&D or field environment; or Master’s Degree in Chemistry with 2 years of relevant experience or a PhD in analytical chemistry.
Specific knowledge and experience in PFAS (including undergraduate/graduate research)
Excellent written and oral communication skills with ability to represent Battelle or its clients at conferences or public forums.
Ability to work in the office, laboratory, and/or field setting
Travel to out-of-state project locations and conferences will be required.

Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry or a related field with 10 years of experience in laboratory, R&D or field environment; or Master’s Degree in Chemistry with 5 year of relevant experience or a PhD in analytical chemistry.
Knowledge (i.e., coursework, internship, and/or undergraduate/graduate research), with one or more of the following:
Remediation technologies
Analytical chemistry
High resolution mass spectral methods
