Description:

Cancer Registry Tech

Position Purpose:

The Cancer Registry Technician collects and maintains information on all cancer patients diagnosed and/or treated at Mount Carmel Health System and affiliates. Maintains annual follow-up statistics on all patients in the registry to determine cancer and survival status. Participates in the collection/ submission of data for statistical reports requested from internal and external sources. Provides QA function for staging activities. Participates in maintaining compliance with regulatory standards for accreditation purposes as established by the American College of Surgeons (ACoS).

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School graduate; Associate's degree in Health Information Management preferred.

· Experience: Minimum one year experience with chart abstraction in cancer registry preferred or three to five years experience in health information management setting.

· Effective Communication Skills

· Strong knowledge of medical terminology; coursework in anatomy and physiology preferred.

· Knowledgeable of PC operation and software applications.

· Above average organizational skills.

· Ability to function independently and as part of a team.

· Ability to work under tight schedule requirements.

· Familiarity with COC accreditation standards related to registry activities.

· Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with internal and external customers.

· Demonstrated tact and sensitivity in dealing with seriously ill persons.
