Description of Job

Temporary Security are called to work on an as-needed basis for campus security; there are no set hours or guarantee of hours. Temporary - Security positions are responsible to work as a team to maintain a safe environment for students and staff. Campus safety includes insuring a safe physical environment through visitor management, building safety, building security and proper staff and student training and safety drills. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Visitor and Guest Management. Enforce the campus visitor policy by providing support to individuals on campus who do not have proper identification. Provide escort services to guests to ensure they arrive at the proper location and are supervised appropriately. Provide crowd control at public events for both individual safety and physical building safety.

  • Liaison with Local Authorities. Work with local authorities during crisis response activities, training, campus awareness, and shared response to student or staff issues. The position will provide investigative work as needed to support the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) or administrative staff at CSDB.

  • Crisis Mitigation, Preparation and Response. This position will be required to act as a responder, an observer, and an incident commander during crisis to assist in maintaining campus security.

  • Campus Physical Security. Responsible for general campus security, focusing on the physical security of the campus. Staff will perform foot patrols of the campus, check building exterior security, and inspect building interiors. This position will investigate anomalies discovered during checks and resolve concerns to ensure a safe learning environment. The position will observe student activities and travels on campus to ensure student safety. The position will respond to staff requests for escorts and assistance to ensure the campus is a safe environment.

  • Administrative Duties. Responsible to maintain logs and appropriate records as well as incident reports. This position will perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or General Education Diploma, (GED).

  • One (1) full year of professional experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position; i.e., law enforcement experience or security experience in a school / residential / hospital / institutional setting.NOTE: One (1) full year of experience is equivalent to 2,080 hours. All experience must be described in detail on the (on-line) application to receive credit.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force, following appropriate safety procedures; Ability to control others (body strength and agility of all four limbs is necessary); Walking / standing more than 60% of time; Ability to effectively manage volatile situations.

  • Security positions at CSDB are designated as "essential services" positions, and the persons selected for these positions are required to be on duty to perform essential and/or emergency services of the State / school without delay or interruption to ensure health, safety, and welfare, regardless of inclement weather conditions.

  • Possession of a current, valid State of Colorado Identification Card.Please provide a copy with application.

  • Direct deposit of paycheck is required.

  • CSDB is a non-smoking facility in its entirety.

  • Selected applicants must comply with the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind Drug-Free Workplace Policy, and other policies.

  • As required by the Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA), selected applicant must verify, within 72 hours of employment, his / her legal right to be employed in the United States.

  • Selected applicant(s) will be required to submit to and pass a background check, to include Colorado and Federal criminal history checks, employment verification, and professional/personal reference checks. Applicants must be without any felony convictions of a nature that would disqualify an applicant's fitness for employment in accordance with Article 5, Section 24-5-101 of the Colorado Revised Statutes (CRS).

Additional Requirements

  • Knowledge of and ability to assess and apply technology to perform the requirements of the position; ability to effectively utilize a variety of computer software applications, which may include but is not limited to e-mail, Internet, word processing, electronic calendar, presentation development, spreadsheet, database, etc.; willingness to stay current and develop skills as needed with or without direct support from CSDB.

  • Ability to work effectively with students / staff who are Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing, Blind/Visually Impaired and/or Deafblind.

  • Ability to respond effectively and positively to feedback; ability to participate effectively in a team setting and to work independently; strong interpersonal and communication skills; effective organizational skills; effective problem-solving skills.

  • A courteous, professional and helpful attitude in the role of CSDB representative.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Temporary Aides are limited Per Colorado constitution, a temporary employee may work for the State no more than nine (9) months in a 12-month period. The 12-month period is not defined as a calendar or fiscal year, but a rolling 12-month period that begins with the month of the first day of work for the temporary assignment.

• For continuous or regular (including part-time) work schedules, the temporary assignment starts the actual date the temporary employee begins work and ends after nine months. For example, a temporary employee who begins working June 15th may work continuously through March 14th. Upon completion of the continuous nine (9) month assignment the temporary aide must take four (4) months off prior to returning in the same position with the State of Colorado / CSDB.

• For intermittent "on and off' work schedules, each hour worked is counted toward a total nine-month limitation within 12 months. In this case, the temporary employee can work up to a maximum of 1,560 hours intermittently within a 12 month period. Upon the completion of a twelve (12) month period the temporary aide must take three (3) months off prior to returning as a temporary aide for the State of Colorado / CSDB.

As a temporary employee, Temporary Security pay state, federal and local (if applicable) taxes, Medicare tax, and contribute to the Colorado Public Employees' Retirement Association (PERA). They also receive Workers' Compensation coverage. A temporary employee does not receive health/dental/life insurance benefits and does not receive annual/holiday pay. Temporary employees are called to work on an as-needed basis; there are no set hours or guarantee of hours. Temporary Aides are not eligible for Shift Differential Pay.

    CSDB operation of hours for the school day are Monday - Friday 7:45 am - 3:45 pm. Some of our students, who don't reside locally (Colorado Springs Area) remain on campus in our Residential / Student Life program where students live together in a dorm setting. Hours of operation for the Student Life program is Sunday - Thursday 3:00 pm - 8:45 am. Please indicate the shifts you would be available to work Temporary Security.
