Control Systems Engineering Internship

Colorado Springs Utilities is seeking to fill a control engineering internship position to support the engineering needs of the System Monitoring, Diagnostics, and Controls (SDC) Section of the Operations Technical Services Department which provides engineering services to support the efficient and reliable operation of power plants and water treatment plants and wastewater treatment plants with the following key objectives.

  • Provide actionable intelligence to support efficient and reliable operations utilizing advanced data analytics and predictive maintenance technologies

  • Identify continuous improvement opportunities through effective root cause analysis and system optimization programs

  • Control System Engineering services to support the full lifecycle of our control system assets

In this role, you will have the opportunity to work on a variety of tasks and projects to support the operational needs of the organization. Some of the specific responsibilities while in this internship will include the following:

  • Control system Life cycle analysis

  • Audit control system installations

  • Consult with engineers, manufacturers, and others to asses current life cycle status

  • Prepare analysis reports for documentation of findings

  • Control system inventory

  • Audit control system installations

  • Utilize and document control system installation into existing database

  • Develop/update database interface tools per discussions with system stakeholders

  • Consult and assist with control system optimization

  • Asses system stability utilizing diagnostic tools

  • Perform system tuning utilizing control system theory such as PID tuning

  • Consult with engineers, manufacturers, and others to asses system modifications to affect optimal system control

  • Work with controls engineers and manufacturers to asses current instrumentation specifications in line with industry trends

  • Work with controls engineers and manufacturers to discuss current instrumentation topology and networking trends

  • Evaluate and report on new and emerging technologies in instrumentation integration

  • Participate in control system Factory and Site acceptance testing for new and modified control system installations

  • Assist with conducting studies and preparing reports

This internship can be summer only (5/27-8/15/25 at 40 hours/week) or summer and into the school year (minimum of 10 hours/week and up to 20 hours/week); summer plus the school year is preferred, but not required.

*Hourly rate is dependent on year completed of academic degree, e.g., second year complete, third year complete, etc.

*Candidates MUST be enrolled in a degree seeking program (Associates/Bachelors/Masters) and be able to provide documentation if requested. Enrollment in a certification program does not qualify.
