Job Summary

The Research Assistant is responsible for performing skilled, administrative, and managerial support in research. Plans and directs certain phases in a research project. Continued employment in this position is contingent upon availability of funding and satisfactory performance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists in the design, planning, and coordinating of experiments in support of various research projects.
  • Selects and applies standard techniques of routine research and keeps detailed records of data.
  • Uses computers and laboratory or technical equipment to perform data analysis, statistical analysis, and technical evaluation of research experiments and results.
  • Evaluates and summarizes results.
  • Assists in preparing and writing proposals to funding agencies.
  • Maintains financial accounts related to research projects.
  • Assists undergraduate and/or graduate students and other laboratory, technical or field staff involved in research.
  • Installs, operates, maintains, and/or repairs research equipment.
  • Assists with reports, invoices, and cataloging records.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors degree in relevant field or any equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • No work experience required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to effectively utilize a computer and applicable software to create databases.
  • Ability to perform statistical analyses, present data and perform other computer related tasks.
  • Knowledge of laboratory maintenance and equipment.
  • Knowledge of computers and computer software related to the position.
  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to lift moderately heavy objects.
  • Ability to exert heavy force.
  • Familiarity with appropriate laboratory and/or technical equipment.
  • Ability to effectively utilize a computer and applicable software to create databases, perform statistical analyses, present data and perform other computer related tasks.
  • Work beyond normal business hours and/or work on weekends.
  • May be required to work in hot, cold, and extreme weather conditions.
  • Travel may be required.
  • Familiarity, experience, or ability to use specific equipment may be required.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to perform common office functions.
  • Ability to frequently communicate with other individuals within the workplace.
  • Ability to operate a computer and other office productivity machinery.
