Description

The Department of Global Languages and Cultures in the College of Arts and Sciences at Texas A&M University invites applications for the full-time, 9-month position of tenured professor to serve at least one 5-year term as Department Head. The position of Department Head includes two months of summer salary for the duration of the administrative position. The anticipated start date for the position is August 1, 2025, or as otherwise negotiated. The Department Head reports to the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. Applicants must have demonstrated strong administrative skills, experience commensurate with leading an academic department in a research environment, and commitment to the study of languages and cultures from a humanities perspective. The successful candidate will manage the department’s daily operations, including evaluating personnel, overseeing the operating budget, and making decisions that affect the department’s success such as strategic planning and faculty recruitment, as well as developing the department’s programs and national reputation.

The department headship will be the primary role of this faculty position for at least 5 years, during which time the successful candidate will be expected to maintain a scholarly agenda and teach with a reduced load.

Department and Institution

The Department of Global Languages and Cultures is an intellectually diverse department of approximately sixty faculty members. It offers the BA in Global Studies, Spanish, Modern Languages (French, German, or Russian), and Classics; interdisciplinary programs in Africana Studies, Jewish Studies, and Religious Studies; and graduate (MA and PhD) degrees in Hispanic Studies. The Department is one of eighteen in the College of Arts and Sciences, encompassing more than 130 areas of study. Texas A&M University is a large and growing research university with more than $1B in research expenditures annually. The campus is located in Bryan/College Station, a metropolitan community proximate to the cities of Austin, Houston, and San Antonio. Qualifications

Candidates must have a doctoral degree in a humanities field related to the study of languages and global cultures, experience and/or skill as an academic leader, a recognized record of scholarship, excellence in teaching, and a demonstrated commitment to academic program development. The area of specialization for the successful candidate is open, but preference will be given to candidates whose teaching and research interests align with the Department’s emphasis on interconnections across human and natural systems around the globe.

Candidates who currently hold the rank of associate professor but meet the standard for the rank of professor may also be considered.
