What we want

The Postdoctoral Research Associate is a key contributor to our parasitology diagnostic and research laboratories. This role involves performing advanced scientific techniques and maintaining a freshwater copepod colony, along with related experimental duties. The position also includes handling various biological samples such as freshwater copepods, parasite specimens, feces, blood, and serum. Additionally, the successful candidate will train and mentor technical and professional staff, fostering a collaborative and knowledgeable team. The role also encompasses organizing inventory and promptly ordering necessary equipment and supplies to support our research efforts.

  • Proficiency in parasitology diagnostic and research techniques, including molecular analyses

*T he well-qualified candidate will also possess a veterinary degree or equivalent, with proven experience in the field of veterinary parasitology. Familiarity with immunodiagnostics, including ELISA, is a plus, and demonstrated creativity and high motivation are highly desired.

Responsibilities

  • Research and Development: Performs various parasitology diagnostic techniques, enter results and data, communicate and report results. Performs routine laboratory tests including DNA and RNA extraction, parasite culture, routine PCR and real time PCR and synthesizes and interprets results. Under general supervision, is responsible for conducting research into their field of expertise. Utilizes knowledge and skills granted to them by their education and expertise to complete research projects in their field of expertise. Analyzes research data and summarizes results. Writes and may contribute to research papers, articles, and publications. Assists a project leader with the development and implementation of research projects. Participates with others in sample collection; development of experiments; conducts experiments; and maintains detailed records of data and prepares written summaries of results to be included in reports. Maintains copepod colony, logging information, scheduling tasks and updating protocols.

  • Equipment and Supplies: Operates and maintains lab equipment, including microscopes, centrifuges, thermocyclers, liquid nitrogen and CO2 tanks, and incubators; performs and schedules maintenance on research equipment; may coordinate the use of research equipment and other resources. Assists in ensuring availability of proper laboratory supplies and procures supplies as necessary; may maintain and update records of expenditures on project accounts.

  • Mentoring: May assist, mentor, or supervise part-time student researchers and/or graduate students in standardized techniques and analytical procedures. Assists with preparation and cleaning of worksite.

  • Presentations: Prepares presentation materials on research topic that may be presented to small and/or large groups. Actively participates in the preparation of required technical progress reports to research sponsors.
