Who We Are
The International Ocean Discovery Program (https://iodp.tamu.edu/index.html) (IODP) facilitates global research collaboration studying Earth’s history as recorded in ocean floor sediments and rocks beneath the ocean floor. With numerous seagoing expeditions aboard the scientific drillship JOIDES Resolution (JR), and on behalf of the National Science Foundation (NSF), researchers have gathered core samples from around the world. Following the demobilization of the JR this past summer, Texas A&M University was tasked by the NSF with setting up an instrumented Gulf Coast Repository (GCR), utilizing instrumentation removed from the JR. The GCR laboratories are expected to be operational by Spring 2025, offering curatorial services and advanced capabilities to describe and analyze both legacy and future core samples.
What We Want
We are seeking a GCR Staff Scientist to support Gulf Coast Repository (GCR) science activities. This role involves providing scientific expertise, leadership, and advocacy for science services, legacy projects, new coring projects, data migration, and education/outreach activities. The GCR Staff Scientist will lead GCR laboratory activities, enhance and develop new analytical tools, techniques, and software, and conduct independent scientific research. Additionally, they will contribute to the GCR and Texas A&M University education and outreach mission. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in geological sciences or oceanography, experience in scientific research and project management, and expertise in developing analytical tools and techniques. Qualifications
Required Education and Experience:
PhD in Earth Science.
Three years of relevant professional experience in scientific research, academics, drilling operations, and core repository procedures.
Required Licenses and Certifications:
- Ability to obtain passport and international travel visas on a continuing basis.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work independently and multitask.
Consistently and cooperatively communicates effectively with varied groups, demonstrating excellent teamwork, leadership, and displaying a service-oriented attitude in all interactions.
Ensures strong team approach to service deliverables through routine team building, training, and interactions.
Promotes cooperation among international scientific ocean drilling programs and associated Earth science participants.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience as a project manager, engaging with internal and external stakeholders.
Experience with scientific ocean drilling.
Experience in working on projects related to instrumentation development/enhancement and software.
Experience working on education and outreach projects, including contributing to workshop organization. Background in geological sciences or oceanography.
Responsibilities
Staff Scientist- Provides scientific expertise and leadership to management and improvement of GCR scientific laboratories to maximize scientific capabilities. Contributes as a team member for analytical tool and software enhancements. Helps coordinate legacy projects (i.e. LEAPs and SPARCs) involving GCR legacy assets and serving on Legacy Sample Allocation Committees. Assist with coordination of SODCO shore-based expedition phase use of the GCR, as needed. Serves as liaison at national and international meetings and gives presentations to communicate GCR activities. Assists with data migration quality control. Conducts independent scientific research in specific field of expertise, presents research results at national and international scientific meetings, and publishes results in leading, internationally recognized Earth Science journals. Promotes cooperation among international scientific ocean drilling programs and associated Earth science participants. Understands, complies, and administers all pertinent TAMU, TAMRF/TAMUS, state, and federal policies.
Education and Outreach Activities- Contributes to the GCR and Texas A&M University educational mission through annual workshop(s) focused on scientific ocean drilling topics and use of GCR instruments. Serves as liaison to the scientific community to select appropriate topics for the annual core school, coordinate annual call of applications and invitations, identify instructors, and arrange workshop logistics. Collaborates with TAMU faculty and mentors undergraduate and graduate students as needed. Assists GCR Curator with public outreach events, public relations, and communications related to legacy and new coring projects.
