Job Description

Under supervision, works cooperatively with the feed and fertilizer industry to ensure compliance with requirements in the Texas Agriculture Code and Rules for the Texas Feed & Fertilizer Control Service.

Responsibilities:

  • Travel to and/or call on feed and fertilizer manufacturers, distributors, integrated operations and consumers to identify, inspect and sample products subject to the Texas Commercial Feed and Fertilizer Control Acts.

  • Examine and review product labeling and documentation.

  • Prepare, complete and submit technical communications such as inspection and investigation reports, summaries and presentations in a timely, legible fashion.

  • Develop knowledge of industry operations in the assigned duty area, and become familiar with regulations and policies.

  • Under direct supervision, conduct investigations related to animal illness or death, crop loss, adulterated product, and misbranded product.

  • Complete basic training and participate in educational outreach activities as directed.

  • Assist to conduct compliance, enforcement and emergency response activities.

  • Adhere to Office of the Texas State Chemist standard operating procedures (SOPs) and suggest improvements.

  • Recognize and report conditions that require regulatory attention.

  • Operate and maintain state vehicle and equipment.

  • Promote workplace safety and use appropriate personal protective equipment.

  • Testify and give deposition for administrative hearings and court cases.

  • Conduct basic inspections and investigations under state authority.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in agriculture-related field or agribusiness

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Excellent computer software skills, including word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.

  • Ability to develop strong investigation and interrogatory skills.

  • Strong analytical skills and an eye for detail.

  • Ability to work cooperatively with diverse groups and solve problems in a professional manner.

  • Ability to pass an FDA background check and obtain commissioning from FDA.

  • Other duties as required.

  • Reside in/provide surveillance for the following counties: Andrews, Borden, Coke, Dawson, Ector, Fisher, Gaines, Garza, Glasscock, Howard, Irion, Kent, Lynn, Martin, Midland, Mitchell, Nolan, Reagan, Scurry, Sterling, Stonewall, Terry, Tom Green, Upton, and Yoakum

Required Licenses or Certifications:

  • Ability to pass an FDA background check and obtain animal food and drug commissioning form FDA.

  • Valid drivers license.

Other Requirements:

  • Climb, stretch, work at great heights, and carry heavy loads (100 lbs.).

  • Work beyond normal business hours and/or work on holidays/weekends.

  • Work within the assigned duty area.

  • Travel required.

  • Emergency response required.
