The Associate Research Scientist is responsible for assisting researchers use complex high-performance computing resources for advanced computing purposes; developing approaches for deploying new computing frameworks on high performance computing infrastructure; providing technical oversight on projects; assisting in the design and support of collaborative research studies; training users on new high-performance computing resources; supporting regional and national collaborations; and serving as a principal investigator on grant applications.

Qualifications
Required Education and Experience:
PhD in computer science, or related physical science or engineering field that uses research computing approaches
Three years of professional experience (post PhD) with research computing frameworks and their applications to solve problems in one or more scientific domains
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Excellent oral, writing, and interpersonal communication skills
Advanced knowledge of programming, software development. Proficiency in at least one programming language such as Python, Fortran, C++, or CUDA, with the ability to learn others as needed
Familiarity with tools, applications, and techniques used in scientific computing
Proficient in using the LINUX/UNIX operating systems
Ability to work independently and manage multiple task loads
Ability to work on team projects and work cooperatively with others
Ability to collaborate, learn continuously and be adaptable
Preferred Education and Experience
Familiarity with scientific applications common to research computing environments
Familiarity with popular analysis toolkits such as R, Python frameworks, and Matlab
Familiarity with software management suites such as Anaconda
Familiarity with AI/ML frameworks such as, Pytorch
Familiarity with organizing information and data management services
Familiarity with composable environments, cloud platforms, containers, kubernetes, and other forward facing HPC technologies
Experience in developing partnerships and collaborations
Demonstrate project management and coordination capabilities
Demonstrate an ability to write scientific, general purpose, and technical documents
Preferred Licenses and Certifications
Certification on HPC or cloud platforms
Certification on Deep Learning and AI/ML frameworks
Responsibilities
INTERGRATING CURRENT COMPUTING APPROACHES IN HPC- Supports complex parallel workflow approaches on heterogeneous high performance computing systems. Develops ways to incorporate AI/ML frameworks such as Pytorch, into high performance computing environments using software, GUI and API-based approaches. Develops new container-native services for AI/ML. Assists in building scaffolding for users to use AI/ML frameworks on new HPC devices including disaggregated, and software-defined composable approaches. Develops and delivers training to researchers that leverage the unique capabilities of composable devices such as through integrating AI/ML with numerical simulations. Reviews system and program documentation for accuracy and completeness.
CONSULTING, PROPOSAL PARTICIPATION, AND DISSEMINATION- Provides technical leadership and expertise to the facility’s user community in the computational aspects of their research through intensive consulting, and general support activities, all aiming at integrating HPC technologies into research. Leads the assessment of research client needs and development requirements. Participates in scientific research proposals for external funding. Responds to user queries regarding HPRC resources. Supports funded efforts at HPRC. Updates training provided to users on the advanced use of high-performance computing resources. Travels and presents at conferences and events at times.
SELF-GUIDED RESEARCH- Conducts self-guided research in topics relevant to research computing. Presents findings at relevant conferences and through publications in proceedings and professional journals. Pursues external funding opportunities. Adopts new models for researcher engagement, and training, including the development of pedagogical approaches as appropriate. Publishes papers and technical reports on these findings.
TESTS DEPLOYMENT OF NEXT GENERATION LARGE SCALE COMPUTING SYSTEMS- Develops benchmark applications that can be used to evaluate the performance of next generation large scale computing systems. Works with the systems administrator team to test applications on the composable ACES supercomputer. Runs scientific applications and software management suites on this platform to test it. Tests the accelerator-to-accelerator communications performance for scientific applications. Reviews recommendations for improvement of programming tools and strategies as part of the development process.
CYBERINFRASTRUCTURE FOCUSED COLLABORATIONS- Develops and participates in research collaborations that are related to the ACES project Assists researchers in these collaborations use new technologies. Assists with collaborative projects and proposals for future funding opportunities. Manages research projects and mentor staff and students in these cyberinfrastructure specific research studies.
OFFICE OPERATIONS, OUTREACH AND STAFF TRAINING- Develops standards and oversees the implementation of procedures for conducting research of problems and the formulation of recommended solutions for customers using high-performance computing resources. Participates in mentoring and development of HPRC users and employees. Assists in the installation/maintenance of high-performance computing software on various operating systems. Develops standards and procedures for programming to include coding, debugging, and optimizing of a HPRC users’ programs. Aids in the development of ad-hoc programs for customers of high-performance computing resources. Provides training to internal staff to maintain expertise on the use of high-performance computing resources used for scientific research. Develops and participates in HPRC’s community outreach efforts. Keeps current in professional growth, state/university rules and regulations, and policies, procedures, and various standards in research administration.
